What have you found to be useful treatments (acupuncture and herb) for

HPV, the STD virus which affects women and is undetectable in men? The

patient in question is 32, thin, likes to run, smokes, irregular eating

habits. Some hirsutism. She is more qi than blood, tends toward lung qi

deficiency historically with a lot of bronchitis in childhood. Pale,

somewhat sallow complexion. Night person. Catches colds easily.

Menstrual cycle varies to being longer in-between bleeding. Menses are

normal color with few clots, no painful cramps. She was recently

diagnosed with " advanced HPV. " This is medically recognized as a

pre-cancerous condition. Thanks for any and all of your thoughts and

experiences. She is ready to make big lifestyle changes.

Hi Frances:

This is my area of expertise and research.

First, I would like to say that it is important overall to diagnose her

overall for her overall pattern differentiation and treat her in that

manner (which I think you are already doing!). Since HPV is not a

systemic disease but has local manifestations it can be treated locally

in conjunction with your other treatments.

Having said that I want to say a few things about HPV. I want to clear

up a misconception. HPV causes cancer in both women and men.

HPV-related cancers include cervical cancer, vulvar cancer, anal cancer

and oral cancers. There are a few strains that cause cancer (we do not

know which they all are however), some that causes warts but do not

cause cancer and others that appear benign. I have never heard the term

" advanced HPV " . The terminology is usually cervical neoplasia or anal

neoplasia which can be broken down into low grade squamous

intraepithelial lesions (LSIL) or high grade intraepithelial lesions

(HSIL). HSIL is the specific precursor lesion to HPV-related cancers.

At, UCSF, we are in Phase II testing of herbal formulas specifically for

treating the lesions (HSIL) that lead to anal cancer in women and men.

It is possible these might treat cervical or vulvar or oral disease as

well.

As far as treating the HPV, there are no specific herbal formulas in the

literature or currently being studied that actually proven to " clear "

HPV. There are anecdotes but no proof. The studies we have done so far

show anti-caner effects of formulas but not HPV clearance effects.

Also, as we age, HPV naturally is cleared from the body in people with

normal immune systems. Therefore, it is conjectured that people with HIV

are ore at risk lifetime for HPV-related disease or undergoing

chemotherapy.

Smoking is also highly statistically correlated with progression of HPV

lesions to cancer.

I personally believe that folks who are more deficient are at higher

risk of acquiring and having disease associated with Toxic Heat

syndromes such as HPV. Sounds like this might be the case here.

You will need much more info, such as the type of lesion, the treatment

being suggested, etc. In cervical disease there is a standard of

treatment for cervical neoplasia which is ablation of the lesions. If

the lesion is LSIL you might want to discuss with her Western physician

to treat her with Chinese medicine first and ask her doctor to retest

later.

The only definitive testing is colpscopy with Lugols' staining and

biopsy.

So, treating Toxic Heat locally, treating overall Deficiency, stopping

smoking and doing everything to improve immune function and decrease

inflammation is my suggestion.

Interesting research being done on using the mushroom Coriolus

versicolor (Yun Zhi) to treat HPV.

Hi Misha,

I appreciate your additional suggestions regarding my patient with the

" advanced HPV " dx. It is very helpful. Since I know her physician, we

will be in communication. Sharon W, what sorts of tx have you found

helpful? Any douches or internal applications of herbal medicines? Her

immune system, inflammation, and smoking are top priorities.
