Guest guest
Dear everyone I'm seeking advice about treating someone who has been on antiHIV drug cocktails for many years and is suffering potentially debilitating side effects. I would like to know other people's experience in countering these SE. Much of the accessible Chinese Medicine literature on HIV seems to be dated around the 1990s and there is not much discussion of the health costs (and possible herbal interventions) of long-term ARV and other drugs. Subhuti Dharmananda reports the problems of muscle wastage for example but does not indicate herbs which will counter this (obviously without countering the antiviral function of the drug!) My patient (my stepson) is 38 and currently taking kaletra (a ratonivir/liponivir mix protease inhibitor), D4T (stavidune) plus 3TC (nonnucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor) to reinforce D4T and prevent viral mutation. His viral load is undetectable, T cells are 600-900 (38-40%)[this latter is very good] but his cholesterol is 10.1 and he is experiencing lipoatrophy and lipodystrophy - thickening of fat deposits around his abdomen particularly - and muscle wastage in his legs and buttocks particularly. He has mild neurpoathy, intermittent diarrhoea and frequent loose stools, constant fatigue, appetite, sleep, urine OK. His pulse is slippery although weakish, his tongue coat is yellow and thick but moist, red tip of tongue, narrow tongue body. My current plan is to give him a mix of herbs : yin yang huo + gou qi zi to boost bone marrow huang qi,dang gui, bai zhu + fang feng to boost Spleen qi and immunity huang qin + hu zhang to reduce liver toxicity zi cao, mu dan pi + xuan shen to clear blood heat shan zha, ze xie, gua lou + chen pi to clear damp & Phlegm heat Any suggestions or sharing of experience or research would be very welcome Thanks and my best wishes to you all for a happy new year Sue Cochrane
Guest guest
Hi Sue: Please note that I have written a book that includes many of the drug side effects as well as HIV/AIDS issues. It is out of print, however the recommendations are based on basically the same medications (which have not changed categories substantially since the book was written). Only thing is that there is not much info on lipodystrophy - however all the other conditions are included. The book is called The HIV Wellness Sourcebook: An East West Guide to Living with HIV and Related Conditions. You can find it at Amazion at http://www.amazon.com/HIV-Wellness-Sourcebook-Related- Conditions/dp/0805051171 You may also contact me offline for more info. Guest guest
Sue- you might have his meds reviewed- the D4T is the anti-retroviral most likely to lead to lipodystrophy, as it is a significant mitochondrial toxin- your patient should ask his infectious disease Dr about other options instead of D4T as part of his HIV regimen- I doubt that herbal medicine is powerful enough to counteract the continued use of his regimen if it is resulting in such significant side effects- good luck, David Appleton L.Ac --- suecochrane36 <suecochrane wrote: > Dear everyone > I'm seeking advice about treating someone who has > been on antiHIV > drug cocktails for many years and is suffering > potentially > debilitating side effects. Guest guest
Dear Misha thanks for your reply. I have ordered your book from Amazon but I am in Australia and expect not to receive it promptly! There was no detail of publication date - if it is pre-2000 it may not include information gained from the long term use of these drugs. Are you still working with HIV +ve people on long term drug regimes. Are your herbs helping? Are there other sources of clinical experience and research you could point me to? thanks for your input Sue , " Misha Cohen " <TCMPaths wrote: > > Hi Sue: > Please note that I have written a book that includes many of the drug side effects as well > as HIV/AIDS issues. Guest guest
Dear David Thanks for your reply. I thought I made it clear that the SE he is experiencing is from the particular drugs he is on. Because of the his treatment history D4T is the only available drug for him. An alternative drug will not be released to him unless his liver begins to fail! perhaps this is a pecularly Australian approach to dispensing HIV medicine! Do you have experience treating these side effects? regards Sue , david appleton <acuapple wrote: > > Sue- you might have his meds reviewed- the D4T is the > anti-retroviral most likely to lead to lipodystrophy, > as it is a significant mitochondrial toxin- your > patient should ask his infectious disease Dr about > other options instead of D4T as part of his HIV > regimen- I doubt that herbal medicine is powerful > enough to counteract the continued use of his regimen > if it is resulting in such significant side effects- > > good luck, > > David Appleton L.Ac > --- suecochrane36 <suecochrane wrote: > > > Dear everyone > > I'm seeking advice about treating someone who has > > been on antiHIV > > drug cocktails for many years and is suffering > > potentially > > debilitating side effects.
