Acupuncture at A_09-Sifeng (Four Seams) for anorexia in children?

Have you tried acupuncture at A_09-Sifeng (Four Seams) for anorexia in

children?

435000, China. skystone200 OBJECTIVE: To observe effect of

acupuncture at SIFENG (EX-UE 10) on serum leptin level in the child of

anorexia, so as to reveal relation between changes of blood leptin level and

anorexia of child. METHODS: Forty-two cases were randomly divided into 3

groups. Treatment group A (n = 15) was treated with acupuncture at

SIFENG, once/week, 3 consecutive sessions constituting one course;

treatment group B (n = 15) was treated with acupuncture at SIFENG, once /

2 weeks, 3 consecutive sessions constituting one course; Group C

(medication group, n = 12) was treated with oral Lactein tablets, 1-2 tablets /

time, TID, 4 weeks constituting one course. RESULTS: The effective rates

in acupuncture Groups A & B were 93.3% and 93.3%, which were higher

than that in the medication group, with a very significant differences (P <

0.01); after treatment, the serum leptin levels in all 3 groups had very

significant changes (P < 0.01); the improvements of serum leptin levels in

Groups A and B were better than that in the medication group (P < 0.05).

CONCLUSION: Acupuncture at SIFENG can promote secretion of serum

leptin in the child of anorexia, and improve anorexia. PMID: 18085139

NOTES (by Phil):

(1) The role of leptin in anorexia is controversial;

(2) Lactein is a milk protein-extract. http://tinyurl.com/2lj57d says that

several

grades of Lactein are available. Whilst it has a lower protein content than

most other milk proteins (minimum 75%), it's amino acid profile is one of the

best available and has a high biological value. Lactein has good binding

properties; not comparable to egg albumen.

WWW does NOT indicate that Lactein is used to treat anorexia in WM.

Medline has NO hit for lactein AND anorexia, except that Chinese paper.

Thus, the validity of the Tx in Group 3 is questionable.
