How fast is a fast pulse -- really

When i first learned pulses a fast pulse was 80BPM and above. Now i notice

that it is 90BPM and above. John Shen also said it was 82 BPM and above. My

experience is that 90 BPM is really fast and for most people 80 BPM or above

is a good criteria for a rapid pulse. Any thoughts?

Hi Michael,

I definitely agree that a fast pulse is anything at or over 80. At that

rate, there is something going on that is clinically relevant. Most pulse texts

will say 60-90 bpm is normal, but I feel (and teach my pulse students) that

72-76 is ideal, and 70-78 or is normal.

According to other practitioners, like Jeffrey Yuen, the number of beats

correspond with the patient's breath, so there is some disagreement.

I think the correlation with the practitioner is part of the development of

the art of the medicine - the Zong Qi of the practitioner is steady no matter

what they are engaged in.

Wow! So I'm back with no certainty about that one as well. How can anyone

ever get out of acupuncture school and not have definitive answers to these

very basic questions. Jeffrey is contradicted by both Bob Flaws and

Maciocia. Now that should be enough for us to raise a miner student

rebellion or face the fact that we may just have to trust ourselves a bit

more. PS I still favor that the pulse should be compared to the

practitioner's breath.
