Guest guest
Can anyone point me to a good reference with instructions for making herbal preparations (salves, creams, lotions, etc)? Also, if I am going to start to experiment with making my own products, are there are pieces of equipment that are must have? And one last question, where is a good source for things like carrier oils, beeswax, and other raw materials? Thanks- Adam

Guest guest
Adam, Besides the two books Paul mentioned, which are great, I'd recommend you find a copy of Complete External Therapies of Chinese Drugs by Xu Xiangcai from Foreign Language Press. It has quite a selection of recipes for specific medical conditions ranging from surgical and post surgical to trauma and ortho., to dermatology. It's organization is a little cumbersome but it does lucidly explain the techniques for preparing a variety of extracts and preparations with Chinese herbs. A prominent reason this would be a useful complement to Cech and Green's medicine making books (which I love and use all the time for Western herbs) is that it deals with the tools you are trained to use. What the two Western herbals don't have is a lot of information about the solubility of Chinese herbs and/or constituents that might be associated with them. So as a Chinese practitioner you may wind up trying to use techniques that aren't relevant to the plants you have in your pharmacy. I know several eager herbalists who spent a lot of time and money making a complete TCM tincture pharmacy only to find out that they didn't get the same results they could expect with decoction or powdered extracts without getting their patients intoxicated if at all. That being said there is a really neat article by Jake Fratkin floating around the internet somewhere about making percolated tinctures of custom herbal formulas for patients to increase compliance. This is a great technique with which you can make a stronger tincture with dried herbs in a day or so. Take a peek at our website if you like. We are offering a two day medicine making class in Santa Cruz county May 10, 11 that has been approved for CEU's for Ca. L.Ac.'s. Feel free to contact me off list if you have questions. Guest guest
One thing is to also pour a little grain alcohol over the pot of herbs and sit overnight, then add water and boil/reduce. The alcohol breaks down the cellulose and increases the availability of the constituents. And the alcohol is gone from the end product. waldropeww <dr.w.w.waldrope wrote: > > > > Can anyone point me to a good reference with instructions for makingherbal preparations (salves, creams, lotions, etc)? Also, if I am going to start to experiment with making my ownproducts, are there are pieces of equipment that are must have? Guest guest
If you are planning to make herbal preparations, I suggest doing a fairly extensive study first. Each herb has an optimum extraction method, alcohol percentage, etc. Resins are processed differently from aromatic leaves or mushrooms or various types of roots. It is easy to make mediocre herbal preparations, but it is no simple matter to make excellent preparations. I would highly recommend the David Winston Center for Herbal Education, which will take you in detail through optimal extraction percentages, what to look for in the herbs, when to harvest, whether to process fresh or dried, and thorough discussions of which extractions are better for what conditions. _http://www.herbalstudies.org_ (http://www.herbalstudies.org) He has an on site and simultaneous online course which will be starting up in September, but you may still be able to get in. He will becoming out with a 600 page materia medica next year that has been in development for over 30 years. He apprenticed with Dr. Eng in NYC, a Chinese family tradition practitioner with additional martial arts medicine and learned to do all the pao zhi, is a noted Cherokee herbalist trained from childhood, is one of the leading authorities on eclectic medicine, and according to a prominent doctor of Ayurvedic medicine knows more of those herbs than most Ayurvedic practitioners in the US. He runs Herbalist & Alchemist, one of the two top rate tincture companies. If the few hundred Chinese herbs covered aren't the ones you need, then you will be prepared to extrapolate from the others. I took it after my MSTOM, and found it extremely worth while, eventhough I had been following him for years before OM. Karen S.
