We are not legally responsible for making appointments for our patients to

see doctors we refer them to. In fact the MDs do not typically do that- they

just give out referral slips. Just document whether you refer them to " a

doctor " , a specific doctor or a specific type of doctor. It is the patient's

right to find a different doctor than the one we refer them to. Or to not go.

Of course if you make the appointment it would be hard to legally claim that

you hadn't referred.

All-

I had never heard before, what Alon states below - that we are required to

make the appointments for our patients when making referrals. Is this standard?

Remember that legally it may not be enough to just tell them to go, you may

need to actually call the MD and schedule the patient, at list this is the

standard in western medicine.

In argent situations the appointment or at least a call and discussion

with the refereed to MD is done every time. I do not know if its truly

a legal requirement but it has been done in every clinic i have work

in, the urgency is made clear to the other office so that the patient

does not wait for appointment.
