Notes on Chuanxiong from multiple WWW sources are below;

 

I am unhappy with single references to the following actions for Chuanxiong:

 

Tonify / Nourish Yin

Tonify / Nourish Blood

COMMON NAME: Cnidium / Ligusticum Rz, Szechuan Lovage Rz;

??Conidium

 

PHARMA NAME: Rz Ligustici Wallichii, Rz Cnidii; Rz Conioselini Unvittati;

Rz Levistici officinalis

 

HB CLASS: Disperse Xueyu~ Analgesic;

 

NATURE: Warm; Aromatic*; Fragrant; Acrid; Bitter-Sweet

 

CHANNELS: LV; GB; PC; Enters Xuefen*

 

DOSE: As Dec: 3-9g SID; 9-15g for serious cases;

Tetramethylpyrazine injection: 40-120mg added in glucose solution IV in

drips / d for angina pectoris & ischemic apoplexy;

Sodium ferulate Tab: 10mg TID for leucocytopenia & pectoris;

Powder: Topical for bony spur & spinal hyperplasia

 

ACTIONS:

(1) Chuanxiong is key Hb in Female DysFx* but AVOID prolonged use;

Rectify Xue; ??Tone Xue; Disperse Xueyu*; Rectify Qi; Disperse Qizhi;

Disperse LV Qizhi; Quicken LV Xue; Free Jingluo;

 

(2) Disperse Xueyu* esp in chest; Disperse HT Xueyu; Tone HT; Calm

Shen; Hypotensor; Vasodilator~ HT & Peripheral arteries, capillaries & other

blood vessels; Aid cerebral microcirculation; Boost microcirculation esp to

brain / cerebrum; Reduce cerebral vessel resistance; Anticoagulant /

Antithrombus; HT Muscle~ Antiischaemia;

 

(3) Ascend Qi & Analgesic esp headache / sinusitis; Ease pressure in

sinusitis; Disperse Wind; Ease Spasm; Spasmolytic; Expel Cold; Disperse

Xueyu in skin;

 

(4) Also: Move Stas; Tone Uterus (induce contraction); Haemostat in

CLINICAL USES:

(1) pain dt Qizhi-Xueyu; Qizhi / Xueyu + trauma, swelling~ in trauma,

headache, hypochondrium pain / distension; abdomen~ pain; LV DysFx; LV

Qi-Xueyu; LV Channel Stag; LV pain, GB DysFx; Pain, menses~ irregular,

amenorrhoea, dysmenorrhoea, foetus~ dead & placenta~ retention,

dystocia, etc; colic; LV pain; flank pain, loin pain;

 

(2) Xueyu esp in chest**; HT DysFx; HT~ CHD; HT~ ischaemia / infarction;

chest pain / distension, hypertension, angina*; thromboangiltis obliterans;

apoplexy;

 

(3) Wind Cold, Wind Heat, Wind Damp, Xueyu & Xuexu + headache*,

migraine, body pain & arthritis*; headache~ recurrent; vertigo dt Wind; Wind

Cold Bi + rheumatism; headache; Wind Heat + headache; muscle spasm;

tendon spasm / pain; headache*; sinusitis w pressure pain*; Wind Cold

Damp + arthralgia, muscle contracture & of limb pain; myalgia, arthralgia;

COMBINATIONS:

(1) Chuanxiong + other Disperse Xueyu Qizhi / Xueyu;

 

(2) Chuanxiong + Sanqi in HT~ ischaemia / infarction to increase micro-

vascular density; Circulation~ poor; hypertension, angina, headache, chest

pain, thromboangiltis obliterans; Chuanxiong + Gouteng, Niuxi, Baishao,

Tianma, Juhua in hypertension dt LV Yang Uprising; Chuanxiong, Chishao,

Honghua, Danshen, Sanqi in hypertension dt Xueyu in brain Collaterals;

 

(3) Chuanxiong + other Hbs for headache in Wind Cold + headache*,

migraine, body pain & arthritis*; headache~ recurrent, vertigo; Wind Cold Bi

+ rheumatism; headache; Wind Heat + headache; Chuanxiong + other Hbs

to Disperse Wind Cold + Disperse Damp in Wind Cold Damp + arthralgia,

muscle contracture & of limb pain; Chuanxiong + Danggui to Quicken Xue in

Xueyu even in skin DysFx whether Xu / Shi;

 

CAUTIONS:

TOXIC; overdose may shorten time between menses & cause menorrhagia,

pollakisuria, abdomen tingling & pain, headache, emesis & urodynia;

 

CI: menorrhagia / prone to bleeding;

 

AVOID in Yinxu Fire headache w mouth~ dry & T: red;

 

CAUTION: Pregnancy (Uterus~ Tonic; was used in slow parturition &

dystocia); may interfere w Anticoagulant drugs; safe in cookery
