Guest guest
Dear Licensed Acupuncturists, I came across a brochure for medical acupuncture recently, published by the American Academy of Medical Acupuncture. I am just now taking a look at their website, and am finding great information, from an allopathic perspective, on how acupuncture works and why it is valuable. This could be very valuable information to any of us, who want to network with medical doctors and speak with them in their language. The link to this particular page is: http://www.medicalacupuncture.org/acu_info/priv.html Like many licensed acupuncturists, I'm not happy that docs with little training get to call themselves " medical acupuncturists " . However, we can certainly make use of their research for our own benefit! They have a journal which might be useful. They also have a page from 1999 about how much training different kinds of docs need to practice medical acupuncture in various states, but I think it's pretty outdated by now. Call me sneaky if you like, but I'm happy to make use of any perspective that is beneficial. By the way, here's an interesting (and unfortunate for medical acudocs, I think) quote from their brochure, " Doctor, what's this acupuncture all about? " : " Because your doctor carefully sterilizes the needles using the same techniques as for surgical instruments, or uses disposable needles, there is no risk of infection from the treatments. " Ahem. Does anyone really sterilize acupuncture needles anymore? Why would they? Other than this, their brochure doesn't really make any convincing arguments for why it is better to see a medical acupuncturist, rather than a licensed acupuncturist. I find it kind of puzzling as a public relations education piece. I'd like to hear your thoughts on their web info.
