Guest guest
I was wondering how many people use some kind of digital charting system / database for their patient's files. If so what has been your experience and what software do you use? Although I like being fairly low-tech in the clinic I imagine that it must be nice to be able to search records etc. if one had a good database present. A colleague (M.D.) of mine recently started using a tablet computer and loves it. Guest guest
I just use Microsoft Word files, and the Mac folders for current and past patients. I've done this for 20 years, it works just fine, and the Mac has a great search engine for files, 'Spotlight'. Guest guest
I use that TCM Formula Finder. It has place for individual patient encounters and the formula ingredients that were the result. It also has a placeholder for a digital image of a tongue that I like to keep with the patient's record. It'll knock out a HCFA form for ya too. It comes with its own " filemaker lite " to run it, though I open it through filemaker since I often have a few databases open. Approximately $50, see: http://tcmformulafinder.com/ I have no financial interest in the sale of this software. -al. Guest guest
I use the software program called Taoclinic from the company Taomedic. In addition to the database of information regarding herbs, formulas, points, etc., it has a place to manage your clinic - put in all patient information, pictures, appointments, and also prescribe herbal formulas. It also has a search engine with " wizards " to help with diagnosis and many other features. Pretty handy program. Guest guest
Jason, You can look at emrupdate for good discussions of electronic medical records. http://www.emrupdate.com/ Remember that HIPAA compliance issues apply to all electronic medical records. Anyone who has digital records must take appropriate precautions to protect patient privacy. Machines can be hacked and stolen and all that data if not protected properly is going to create a huge liability for anyone who did not take appropriate precautions. If anyone wants to bring themselves up to date on all the federal regulations we are currently responsible for now I suggest picking up a copy of " Quality in Complementary and Alternative Medicine " by David Kailin PhD,MPH,LAc http://tinyurl.com/6j7ok6 . It is the most boringly essential text for an independent medical provider out there to help navigate the waters we already swim in. Just ask anyone who has had OSHA show up at their door because and employee had a needle stick and reported it. As far as software is concerned I use an older version of Soapware and it suits me just fine. I'm about to make the transition to a tablet and can't wait. Guest guest
I've looked at both programs and Taoclinic is a neat program, does a lot of stuff BUT TCM Formula Finder seems to be able to add one's own notes, formulas, protocols - whatever and be searchable. Taoclinic does not. And TCM Formula Finder is out of Santa Cruz, CA and that is great ... Sometimes I'll have a diagnosis, but be unsure as to which formula to use, so I type the diagnosis term(s) into the diagnosis field and get all the hits for that one item. Or, clearly the best way to do this is to start out with a chief complaint such as " headache " and search for that in the symptoms field. Then you'll get all the formulas for headache, at that point it is simply a matter of sorting them or at least thumbing through to locate a formula for a syndrome that applies to your patient. The cool thing about this is locating formulas that there's no way I would otherwise remember. And of course, once you're clear on your herb functions, you can look at the formula and see if it also addresses other symptoms that you hadn't otherwise considered. You know, formulas are treatment principles, and when you locate one that seems to best fit your patient, you're done! I personally have imported a variety of other databases to display in my version. This is something that I can do because of some basic understanding of how FilemakerPro works, so my version has herbs in it too, but I don't know that it ships with them yet. Its also a great template for taking class notes. I've added many class notes when the goal of the discussion ends with a formula, it ends up in my formula finder and that makes these formulas modified by elder practitioners available to me in the clinical environment. How many times have you been to a great seminar, have taken copious notes, but then the notes are not around when you need them? This application removes that problem for me. I still have no financial interest in this product, but the programmer is very responsive to feedback. I've asked for a few features, and they do tend to get adopted for the next version. I think that's pretty neat too. Danny, I think it would be nice to have a means to disable the backup reminder when closing the program, though... -- , DAOM Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional. Guest guest
More than a decade ago I endorsed Acubase but since then I've heard you must get an update every year to use the HCFA. Recently someone bought it because my review was used in their ads and she was disappointed with that added expense. I haven't really explored or communicated with Acubase but I would carefully check the Acubase policy before purchasing it now. doug , " Al Stone " <al wrote: > > On Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 1:21 PM, Happy Herbalist <eddy > wrote: > > > TCM Formula Finder seems to be able to add one's own notes, > > formulas, protocols - whatever and be searchable. > > > >
Guest guest
You can add your notes with Taoclinic; I always add information from other sources regarding the herbs, formulas, or whatever, to the information pages.
