Han lian cao vs Mo han lian Yehuda

Yes. same herb. John Chen still calls it Han lian cao.

Bensky called it Han lian cao in the 2nd edition Materia Medica.

 

Now, he's calling it Mo han lian, because,

" the use of the abbreviated names han lian or han lian cao should be

avoided, as it allows for possible confusion with the highly toxic drug

Campthotheca acuminata (xi shu) for which han lian is a synonym " pg. 837

3rd ed MM

 

Interesting thing is that the team didn't add in the commentary that Mo han

lian is picked at the summer solstice and Nu zhen zi at the winter solstice,

the two ultimate yang and yin times of the year. This idea is written into

the formula: Er zhi wan " Two ultimate pill " (pg 274 in Formulas and

Strategies).
