Why I am interested in Gou Qi Zi juice

Hi Geoff,

I'll be frank with you.  I HATE HIGH PRESSURE SALESPEOPLE WHO DON " T LET ME GET

IN A WORD EDGEWISE!   As with other similar marketing companies such as amway,

etc, almost all of those I have come in contact with in this company have exuded

a  rah-rah spirit that I can't stand.  (not all, but most).  That being said, we

started using the juice on Saturday night (my wife and myself).  I will give you

my impressions: 1.  I do feel sharper and seem to have a little more endurance.

2.  As you my remember, my wife has a  seizure disorder that I have written

about in the past.  Generally, the pattern has been, that her seizures occur

between 21 and 30 days.  Then 3-4 days later she will have a flurry of 3-5

seizures after which she is completely knocked out for close to a week, drooling

and coughing up a tremendous amount of clear phlegm and hallucinating.  Well,

she had a seizure last Friday, and yesterday she did have 3 post-ictal

seizures.

However, today, she has very little phlegm, you would never know that she had

had seizures yesterday,  and she's not hallucinating.  Coincidence?   It's I

think too early to tell, but it seems promising.3.  The juice comes in a very

hard  " space age " plastic bottle that doesn't leach (BTW, those of you who drink

water or juice from thin plastic bottles, that IS a problem, and I would

seriously reconsider using them! If you are interested, I can send you a link

with more imformation.  4  The company offers a full money-back guarantee after

90 days of usage if you return the empty bottles, and are not completely

satisfied, no strings attached.  The woman who introduced me to the product

tells me that she has had one client return the bottles.

That's why the studies are important and why I asked for your (pl) feedback.

Again I hate salespeople, but if a quality product that I and my patients will

benefit from,  is only available through this kind of resource and with this

kind of guarantee, than I'm willing to overlook the vehicle.   Do you think I am

mistaken?

I think it's always important to consider the source of the studies as

well. In this case, a multi-level marketing company (or pyramid

scheme / Amway):

Not saying it isn't a good product, but wasn't that coffee-alternative

pyramid ling zhi thing just going around a short while ago?

Yehuda,

I agree, Gou qi zi is a miracle.

That's why everyone is on its bandwagon.

There's another superfood that is really trendy now too... acai.

There's another multi-level company that puts an acai and goji mix with

fruit juice in a wine bottle

and sells it for beaucoup bucks: http://www.monavie.com/_/controller.html

The one thing that irks me is the whole " Tibetan spiritual " fruit from the

Himalayas gimick.

I know one thing for sure is that the guys who are selling this stuff know

virtually nothing about the medicine behind it all.

I've talked with them.

Hi Yehuda,

Well, thank God your wife is doing better! If the product works, then

great! I was just suggesting looking into the background since I'm

rather getting sick of all the rah-rah cheerleading going on...

especially during these campaign years!

However... you have enough knowledge - why don't you try buying some

good quality gou qi zi and brew your own? You can compare the results

to the miracle product and drink it from perfectly safe glass bottles

if you like. We used to soak Gou Qi Zi in spirits and take a shot

here and there and my friend's father swore it helped his vision

improve. I suspect you can make a even better product on your own with

higher quality gou qi zi (like from Mayway or Spring Wind that I'm

sure is much higher quality than the pyramid deal) and see how it

goes! Pressure cooker... crock pot, grind it up and drink away.

Maybe even source Tibetian Spring Water. Then you can market your own

Yehuda's Miracle Juice and make millions! ;-) But be sure to

remember me when you're on the beach with your wife down in the Bahamas!

Even a pound of " Organic Gou qi zi " from Berkeley Bowl (here in CA) grocery

store

only costs $16. It's in the bulk section. The price has been going down

for the last couple of years.

I was at Whole foods yesterday and there's a group called Bliss Mix,

who's selling Gou qi zi Dark Chocolate and Gou qi zi mixed with Sang shen zi

and nuts.

They have a big fat buddha on their bag... kinda tacky.

I worked at an herb company for six years and talked with a slew of these

entrepreneurs.

None of them know anything about Chinese medicine. They're just out to make

money.

If they knew something about the medicine, I guess I wouldn't care,

but this is just the imperialization and exoticisation of Asia....

like gold miners and treasure hunters on the Eastern seas.

There are people who take Airborne all of the time and get sick from it.

Of course it was designed by a school teacher, not a Chinese herbalist,

even though it was conveniently borrowed from Yin qiao san and mixed with

vitamins.

Yehuda,

My husband and I have had many patients ask about " goji " and " acai

berry " in response to the recent MonaVie rage. (My husband is a DC, I

am an LAc, we share and office) Upon closer investigation, I

discovered that MonaVie does not reveal the percentage of Acai berry

or any of the other herbal ingredients with medicinal properties. The

product could be 90% apple/grape juice for all we know. If you want

to experiment with these juices (acai, goji, mangosteen, etc, etc,)

try going with a company that sells good quality product to

practitioners only. This avoids the whole MLM factor/high pressure

sales pitch. 'Genesis Today' sells pure products @ health food

stores, but they also have a different label to sell to practitioners

at about half the cost.

Good luck! Nice to hear your wife is benefiting from the juice.

Im glad you brought this topic up, we need to be informed about these

products out there so we can educate our patients when they want to

learn more. Many lay people expect us herbalists to know all about

these trendy products.

Cynthia,

Thank you so much for your post. I couldn't agree more. I think someone else

also posted regarding the ethics of providing MLM products in the clinic and

I agree there, too. Of course, then again, I'm one of those mavericks who

don't try to make a profit off of any product suggestions to my patients

when it is related to their case as I feel there is a fiduciary conflict of

interest...but that's another issue entirely.

Your point about ingredient disclosure (or lack thereof) is well taken. And

thank you for passing on the suggestion of an alternative source that only

sells to health stores & doctor's offices. I've had many patients ask about

these two beverages (the " gochi " and the " monavie " ) and being able to have

an alternate, non-MLM, high-quality product to refer in their place will be

useful. So far I've only browsed their website, but will look further into

their company/manufacturing facility/quality, etc.
