Acupuncture Effects on Cardiac Functions Measured by Cardiac Magnetic

Resonance Imaging in a Feline Model. Evid Based Complement Alternat

Med. 2008 Jan 23; [Epub ahead of print] Department of Veterinary

Medicine, College of Agriculture, National Taiwan University, No. 1,

Sec. 4, Roosevelt Road, Taipei 106, Taiwan, R.O.C. wuyl

The usefulness of acupuncture (AP) as a complementary and/or

alternative therapy in animals is well established but more research

is needed on its clinical efficacy relative to conventional therapy,

and on the underlying mechanisms of the effects of AP. Cardiac

magnetic resonance imaging (CMRI), an important tool in monitoring

cardiovascular diseases, provides a reliable method to monitor the

effects of AP on the cardiovascular system. This controlled

experiment monitored the effect electro-acupuncture (EA) at bilateral

acupoint Neiguan (PC6) on recovery time after ketamine/xylazine

cocktail anesthesia in healthy cats. The CMRI data established the

basic feline cardiac function index (CFI), including cardiac output

and major vessel velocity. To evaluate the effect of EA on the

functions of the autonomic nervous and cardiovascular systems, heart

rate, respiration rate, electrocardiogram and pulse rate were also

measured. Ketamine/xylazine cocktail anesthesia caused a transient

hypertension in the cats; EA inhibited this anesthetic-induced

hypertension and shortened the post-anesthesia recovery time. Our

data support existing knowledge on the cardiovascular benefits of EA

at PC6, and also provide strong evidence for the combination of

anesthesia and EA to shorten post-anesthesia recovery time and

counter the negative effects of anesthetics on cardiac physiology.

electroacupuncture, radiation of infrared rays plus passive exercise

on movement disorders of shoulder joint after operation of fracture

of surgical neck of humerous. METHODS: Sixty cases were randomly

divided into an acupuncture plus exercise group (n = 32) and an

exercise therapy group (n = 28). The acupuncture plus exercise group

were treated with electroacupuncture and infrared ray radiation at

rigid soft tissue on the affected side, with adjuvant points, Xuehai

(SP 10), Sanyinjiao (SP 6) and Yang-lingquan (GB 34) selected for

acupuncture treatment and after the needles were withdrawn passive

exercise of the shoulder joints were made. The exercise therapy group

were treated by active exercise after passive exercise of shoulder

joint. Therapeutic effects were observed after treatment for one

month, and shoulder pain scores VAS and scores of activity of

shoulder joint before and after treatment were observed. RESULTS: The

total effective rate of 84.4% in the acupuncture plus exercise group

was better than 64.3% in the exercise group. Before and after

treatment, the VAS scores were 5.8 +/- 0.5 and 3.1 +/- 0.3 in the

acupuncture plus exercise group, and 5.7 +/- 0.5, 4.3 +/- 0.4 in the

exercise therapy group, respectively, with significant decreases

after treatment in the two groups (both P < 0.001), the acupuncture

plus exercise group being more significantly decreased than the

exercise therapy group (P < 0.001). Before and after treatment, the

total scores of activity of shoulder joint were 103.38 +/- 11.10 and

193.61 +/- 10.21 in the acupuncture plus exercise group, and 103.01

+/- 10.01 and 133.45 +/- 9.81 in the exercise therapy group,

respectively, with significant increases after treatment in the two

groups (both P < 0. 01), the acupuncture plus exercise group being

better than the exercise therapy group (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION:

Electroacupuncture, radiation of infrared rays plus passive exercise

has obvious therapeutic effect on movement disorders of shoulder

joint after operation of fracture of surgical neck of humerus. PMID:

Medical Center, Tangshan, Hebei 063000, China. jzyi

OBJECTIVE: To observe clinical therapeutic effect of scalp-

acupuncture combined with exercise therapy on spastic cerebral palsy.

METHODS: Eighty children of spastic cerebral palsy were randomly

divided into a scalp-acupuncture plus exercise therapy group and a

exercise therapy group, 40 cases in each group. The scalp-acupuncture

plus exercise therapy group were treated with scalp-acupuncture and

exercise therapy, with Yundongqu (the motor area), Pinghengqu (the

balance area), Ganjuequ (the sensory area), etc. selected for scalp-

acupuncture, and puncture at main points Baihui (GV 20) and

Sishencong (EX-HN 1) and exercise therapy. The exercise therapy group

were treated by exercise therapy. Changes of GMFM scores and WeeFIM

scores before and after treatment were compared. RESULTS: There were

significant differences in GMFM scores and WeeFIM scores before and

treatment in the scalp-acupuncture plus exercise therapy group (P <

0.001) and in the exercise therapy group (P < 0.05), the former being

better than the later (P < 0.05); the total effective rate was 92.5%

in the scalp-acupuncture plus exercise therapy group and 72.5% in the

exercise therapy group with a significant difference between the two

groups (P < 0.05), the former being significantly higher than the

later. CONCLUSION: The scalp-acupuncture combined with exercise

therapy can improve motor function of limits of children with spastic

cerebral palsy, with therapeutic effect better than that of simple

exercise therapy. PMID: 18972727 [PubMed - in process]

Medical University, Shijiazhuang 050091, China. sheyanfen

OBJECTIVE: To probe into the mechanism of substance-partitioned

moxibustion in treatment of primary dysmenorrhea (PD) of cold-damp

stagnation type. METHODS: The treatment group (105 cases of PD) were

treated with substance-partitioned moxibustion and the control group

(104 cases) were treated with Chinese drug Yueyue-shu. Their

therapeutic effects were observed. Plasma beta-endorphin contents in

menstrual period were determined before and after treatment in 40

patients of each group. RESULTS: The total effective rate of 95.2% in

the substance partitioned moxibustion group was better than 85.6% in

the control group (P < 0.05); after treatment, plasma beta-endorphin

content significantly increased in the substance-partitioned

moxibustion group (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: Substance-partitioned

moxibustion has obvious therapeutic effect on primary dysmenorrhea of

cold-damp stagnation type, which is carried out possibly through

regulating the plasma beta-endorphin content as one of the

mechanisms. PMID: 18972726 [PubMed - in process]

[Effects of different interference orders of electroacupuncture and

exercise therapy on the therapeutic effect of hemiplegia after

stroke] [Article in Chinese] Zhongguo Zhen Jiu. 2008 Oct;28(10):711-

3. Department of Acupuncture and Massage, Fujian College of TCM,

Fuzhou 350108, China. OBJECTIVE: To observe effects of different

interference orders of electroacupuncture and exercise therapy on the

therapeutic effect of hemiplegia after stroke. METHODS: The patients

of hemiplegia due to stroke were randomly divided into a group A and

a group B. The group A were treated by exercise therapy after

electroacupuncture (EA) and the group B by EA after exercise therapy.

Fugl-Meyer evaluation (FME), modified Barthel index (MBI) and

amplitude of somatosensory evoked potential (SEP) on the affected

side before treatment and after one therapeutic course (2 weeks) were

recorded and compared in the two groups. RESULTS: Before and after

treatment, FME were 31.760 +/- 4.438 and 76.640 +/- 3.621, and MBI

were 26.520 +/- 2.413 and 62.360 +/- 3.700 in the group A; and FME

were 32.480 +/- 5.903 and 65.640 +/- 5.212, and the MBI were 28.000

+/- 3.383 and 54.480 +/- 5.205 in the group B, respectively, with

very significant differences in FME and MBI in the two groups (all P

< 0.01); and the different values before and after treatment in the

two indexes in the group A were better than those in the group B (all

P < 0.05). There was a very significant difference in the amplitude

of SEP before and after treatment in the group A (P < 0.01) and no

significant difference in the group B, and there was no significant

difference between the two groups in the different value of the

amplitude of SEP. CONCLUSION: Combination of any orders of

electroacupuncture and exercise therapy can improve limb function of

the patient with hemiplegia after stroke, but the therapeutic effect

of exercise therapy after EA is better. PMID: 18972724 [PubMed - in
