ovarian cyst/mass

Hi,

I have been treating someone herbally for an ovarian cyst and mass for over a

month now. Her MD recommended birth control pills, but she chose not to take

them. I have seen 2 cycles now, and in both, her cramps were more mild, and she

is passing " chunks. " Are the chunks a sign that the cyst and mass are passing

through? Her ultrasound is scheduled for January, so I'd like some advice as to

prognosis, if the mass and cyst will be gone or greatly reduced by then. I have

given her modified versions of Gui Zhi Fu Ling Wan. If you have experience with

this, please share. Thanks!

You say ovarian cyst and mass. Does that mean that the cyst and mass

are separate, i.e. a cyst and a polyp, or do you mean the mass is the

cyst?

If her OBGYN recommended the OCP, it means that her cysts are probably

functional ovarian cysts, as opposed to chocolate cysts/endometriomas.

Because functional cysts can cause disruptions in normal menstrual

cycle intervals, and prevent the start of planned ovulation induction

for IUI or IVF, and occasionally rupture quite painfully - they are

usually managed with OCP's to shut down the HPO axis and deprive the

cyst of the stimulus (FSH) that keeps it hanging around. If it proves

to be a stubborn cyst, or very large and uncomfortable, the doctor

will sometimes aspirate and drain it surgically.

It's possible that some of the tissue (chunks) that the patient is

passing is the ovarian cyst breaking down, but it's also possible that

the cyst is secreting such high amounts of Estradiol that it is

causing her to have a thicker endometrial lining than normal, and so

it is sloughing off larger pieces than usual.

It sounds like you are on the right track herbally. Gui Zhi Fu Ling

Wan is a good guiding formula for ovarian cysts, as is Shao Fu Zhu Yu

Tang (because it goes to the lesser abdomen/Shao Fu area of the left

and right lower quadrants where the ovaries reside).

Herbs to modify either of the above in order to increase its' ability

to break down the cysts are:

Li Zhi He(Litchi)

Xiang Fu/Cyperus

Chuan Lian Zi/Melia

Xia Ku Cao/Prunella

Chuan Shan Jia/Squamus

Zhi Bei Mu/Fritillaria

Di Long/Lumbricus

Also, Kiiko Matsumoto recommends that use of direct rice grain moxa

(15-30) on Liver 8 for any type of pelvic inflammation or stasis

(cysts, endometriosis, myomas)

Hope this helps,
