My notes on Maimendong Tang [Kampo: Bakumondo-To] - Ophiopogon Dec

are:

 

Formula Class: Moisten Dryness; Moisten LU Dryness dt Yinxu

 

Ingredients: Formula is a MODIFICATION of Zhuye Shigao Tang

(Lophatherus & Gypsum Dec) (w Maimendong increased & Zhuye & Shigao

omitted); is better Nourish ST Yin formula than Zhuye Shigao Tang;

 

Inclusion Rates (Mean & Range, %) in 5 separate formulas were:

 

Maidong / Maimendong 41.3 (28.4-61.8) [(1): Cat: Tone Yin; Cold~

slightly; Sweet; Bitter~ slightly; SJM; HT; LU; Clear ST Heat dt

Yinxu, Tone Yin esp LU Yin & ST Yin; Engender Fluids esp in LU & ST];

 

Banxia [TOXIC] 17.2 (9.3-26.1) [Cat: Clear Phlegm; Dispel Cold; Warm;

Acrid; TOXIC; LU; SJM; Move ST Qi; Descend Qi Uprising];

 

Dazao / Hongzao(*) 12.9 (10.9-18.1) [Cat: Tone Qi; Warm; Sweet; SJM;

Tone ST Qi, Engender Fluids]; (*) traditional dose of Dazao was 3

times higher than modern dose;

 

Renshen 7.7 (6.2-10.3) [Cat: Tone Qi; Warm~ slightly; Sweet Slightly

Bitter; LU; SP; Tone Qi; Engender Fluids];

 

Gancao / Zhigancao 7.3 (4.1-10.3) [Cat: Tone Qi; Even; Sweet; All 12

Channels (esp LU; HT; SJM); Tone Qi, Engender Fluids,

Antipharyngitis; Harmonise];

 

Gengmi 13.6 (6.2-20.7) [Cat: Tone Qi; Cool; Sweet; SJM; Tone ST Qi,

Engender Fluids];

 

make Dec; Dose: As Powder: 2-3g BID-TID, w glass of water (total 4-9g

/ d); As Conc Extract powder: Dissolve 1g in 1cup of Hot water &

drink Warm, BID-TID (total 2-3g Conc Extract / d); As Tabs (Conc

Extract): 1-2g, BID-TID (total 2-6g / g);

 

Nourish Yin & Moisten Dryness; Engender Fluids; Nourish LU & ST;

Moisten LU Dryness; Engender Fluids; Descend Qi Uprising; Harmonise

SJM; Aid Digestion~ Aid ST;

 

Indications: best for ST Xu Heat Scorching LU Yin, causing LU dryness

/ LU-ST Yinxu & LU Atrophy (Feiwei); S & Ss: Qi Uprising w Phlegm,

chest tightness, cough~ severe & continuous w Phlegm~ thick / Phlegm~

scanty & resistant (sticky, difficult to expectorate) / Phlegm thin /

copious, dyspnoea, wheeze, asthma, breath shortage / panting,

spitting saliva, nausea, emesis, hiccup, aphonia / dysphonia dt

cough, throat sore, throat~ dry, mouth~ dry (thirst), thirst; T: red

/ red tip & dry w Fur scanty / none; P: fast & Xu (Xu / Weak / Empty)

/ thin; when appropriate S & Ss present, also can Tx bronchitis~

chronic, LU Consumption Damage/ TB / nodules, gasping on exertion,

cough~ whooping (pertussis), pregnancy cough, pharyngitis,

laryngitis, throat inhibited, ST disorders, dyspepsia, ST pain, ST

ulcer, peptic ulcer, duodenal ulcer, ST Acid Reflux, gastritis~

chronic, sweat~ night, weight loss, fatigue, fever-tidal, menses-

inverted (epistaxis / haematemesis during menses), pregnancy emesis,

esophagitis, Bone Steaming; CI in Damp / LU atrophy dt Xu Cold;

 

CAUTION in fever~ high & irritability w PF remaining in Exterior & Qi

& Yin not yet affected;

 

Maimendong Tang is related to Maimendong Tang (Jiawei) [Ophiopogon

Dec (Augmented)] for menses~ inverted;

 

NOTE: Chongmai connects w ST Channel; in ST Xu, ST Qi cannot Descend

to anchor Chongmai Qi; this causes Chongmai Qi Uprising & Xue

Uprising w Qi, causing menses~ inverted & epistaxis, nausea & emesis

etc

Powder; Fritillaria & Snakegourd Powder are:

 

Formula Class: Clear Phlegm & Moisten Dryness; Clear Phlegm~ Internal

Beimu / Beimu (Chuan) 24.6 (17.0-27.8) [(1): Cat: Cool & Clear Phlegm

Phlegm + Ease Cough]; Beimu (Chuan) is better to Moisten than Beimu

(Zhe);

Indications: best for Yinxu LU Dryness / LU Heat / Xu Fire Scorching

Fluids causing Fluids Injury by Dryness & LU to lose Clear Essence &

form Phlegm w Dry Phlegm Stag in LU; S & Ss: cough~ dry, cough

ineffective to expel Phlegm, Phlegm sticky, white, deep-seated &

difficult to cough out / thick & hard to expel, LU emphysema, dyspnea

& wheeze, bronchitis, tracheitis, aphonia, mouth~ dry (thirst),

throat~ sore, throat~ dry; T: red w Fur scanty, dry & white; P: Shi

(Excess, Strong, Full) & thready (thin, fine) / slippery; CI for

cough dt Yinxu; AVOID in Yinxu w S & Ss like cough~ dry, thirst &

sweat~ night;

 

MODIFICATIONS:

(1) for simultaneous Wind Evil attacking LU, add Sangye 10, Kuxingren

8, Qianhu 8;

(2) for LU Network injury by Dryness, cough w Phlegm blood-streaked,

omit Juhong & add Shashen (Bei) 20, Maidong 12, Xianhecao 12;

(3) for Cough~ severe add Kuxingren 8, Sangbaipi 12, Pipaye 8;
