Guest guest
I have a patient, generally Spleen qi deficient, post menopausal, obese, lacks gallbladder, who periodically gets long two toned, striped stools. The top half is clay colored and the bottom half is unusually dark. Normal consistency and odor. It doesn't seem to be a lump of greens or related to any particular food. Any idea either eastern or western what this means? Karen S. Guest guest
The lack of a gallbladder leads to inefficient emulsification of fats leading to steatorrhea or floating white (fatty) stools. In time, the body compensates such that this isn't as much of a problem, but I suspect that the remnants of this mechanism may be visible in that the more fatty materials will still float to the top or be slower to descend in the colon, hence the bi-colored stools. Probably looking at some damp or phlegm in the yang ming to put this into CM terms. Excessively dark stools can indicate upper GI bleeding too. These stools are described as looking like " coffee grounds " . Haven't seen this myself, but I conceive of these stools have a friable or granular appearance. I had this one person send me a picture of her stools once and they were absolutely rainbow colored. It still turns my stomach a bit to recall this image, but it was amazing in its way. -al.
