at least as far as I know.

I agree that Tong Ren Tang is generally one of the best

recommendations for Beijing, but the raw herbs they use to fill

formulas in the upstairs pharmacy are usually still a little scrappy.

Tong Ren Tang really specializes in fancy premium ginseng and velvet

antler, authentic niu huang, etc. For raw herbs used in common

prescriptions, their stuff is usually average at best.

I wish I had a better recommendation for you. I lived in Beijing for

a few months but I never really saw any premium pharmacies there. I'm

sure that some local doctors could refer you to a good shop, but

finding nice herbs in an average pharmacy in Beijing is ironically

much harder than in San Francisco.

I think you'll find that very few Chinese herbs are available in a

certified organic form, no matter where you look. Many herbs are

wildcrafted and many are locally grown with traditional techniques,

but certified organic is only available for maybe one or two dozen

products. I've never seen the words organic and Chinese herbs together

in Beijing, but I was only there for a couple months so I'm not the

best person to answer the question.

The best place for herbs near Beijing is Anguo. It takes a driver and

a 4-5 hour trek each way, but Anguo is an herbal city that has

thousands upon thousands of vendors.

Thank you, Eric. As usual, a very informative post.
