Guest guest
A number of members of CHA recently attended a four day Shang Han Lun workshop in San Francisco with Dr. Huang Huang. I had the pleasure to be one of the translators for the lecture, and I have to say that the material was extremely thought-provoking. The workshop was very well-organized by Pro-D Seminars, and it was really refreshing to see such a sophisticated discussion here in the States. Not only was Huang Huang himself a rare gem as a true expert in Shang Han Lun theory and classical formulas, but the group of attending practitioners was also exceptional. There were many experienced herbalists, top notch new graduates, instructors from schools across the country, and numerous bilinguals in our group. I left feeling not only very stimulated by the course material, but very inspired by the discussions with the other attendees. I'd highly encourage others to attend similar lectures, it is really refreshing to see true experts on stage and it is even more refreshing to see how many great colleagues we have in our community. Two thumbs up to Huang Huang, the audience, and Pro-D seminars for making it happen, it was really special. Chinese readers who are interested in classical formulas should check out Huang Huang's resource-rich website, hhjfsl.com (stands for Huang Huang Jing Fang Sha Long, " Huang Huang's Classical Formula Salon " ). I'd highly recommend it. Eric Brand
Guest guest
Hi Eric- I am sad that I was unable to get away for Dr. Huang's seminar in SF. I went to see him for the week when he came to Amherst in August of 2008. I have found his material to be incredibly useful and cannot wait to see him when he comes to New Orleans for a week in October 2009. Did he see patients at all when he was in SF? -Steve Stephen Bonzak, L.Ac., Dipl. No, it was essentially four days of eight hours of lecture. Extremely interesting stuff, and really great to see the material being transmitted to a wider audience. Experts like Huang Huang are rare even in China, and he was very generous in terms of sharing his perspectives and information. I hear that the New Orleans event will be very comprehensive, sounds like it will be a good one. Eric
Guest guest
Hi. I remember a weekend shang han lun seminar w Dr Huang in New Mexico about 17 yrs ago. Does any one know where I could purchase the poster he created and offered showing the flowchart of symptoms, syndromes and formulas? And does anybody know the book,'waitai secret points'? --- On Thu, 2/5/09, Eric Brand <smilinglotus wrote: Eric Brand <smilinglotus Re: Shang Han Lun with Dr. Huang Huang Thursday, February 5, 2009, 6:03 PM , Stephen Bonzak <stephenbonzak@ ...> wrote: > > Hi Eric- > > I am sad that I was unable to get away for Dr. Huang's seminar in > SF. Guest guest
My mistake, the Dr. Huang I was thinking of is much older, not the same man. Guest guest
Yes, a different Dr. Huang. He wrote a book on AIDS published by Blue Poppy years ago (now out of print). I took that seminar in New Mexico as well.. . On Feb 5, 2009, at 5:09 PM, mystir wrote: > My mistake, the Dr. Huang I was thinking of is much older, not the > same man. Guest guest
Hi Zev'. yeah I know. It was Dr. Huang Bing Shan I was thinking of. Thank your. Is it possible I was that close to you at that time? Do you remember him showing us wild goose chi kung in the parking lot near the horses and the IICM student clinic(if it was that particular seminar)? I revere you and respect you greatly, and it is fun to think we were there. Thanks, buddy.
Guest guest
Hi Eric et al. As one of the organizers of the seminar with Huang Huang in San Francisco, I am happy to hear that it was enjoyed by all. Like Steven, I was also not able to attend. There was a similar feeling last August, in terms of the caliber of practitioners who attended and the level of conversation in general. The course in San Francisco was a foundational course on the 10 body types and should be available before long on-line. Also, Michael Max's translation of Dr. Huang's text on the 10 types should be out soon through Eastland Press. The course in New Orleans is an advanced course and one reason we planned the San Francisco course was to give people a chance to be prepared for this next level with Dr. Huang. When it's available I'll post it here. Guest guest
Sharon - For those of us who were unable to attend Dr. Huang's Foundational Course in SF, but who will purchase it and complete it via Pro D, will this be sufficient pre-requisite to attend the advanced Course in New Orleans? Guest guest
I don't remember that part, but I was there, but I remember it being close to 20 years ago. Guest guest
Eric Thanks for the summary- sounds like a great week! There will be a translation of one of Dr. Huang's books coming out from Eastland Press in the next few months. ÖÐҽʮ´óÀà·½ " Ten major formula categories in " translated ably by Michael Max. This text likely will have some of the information from the SF lectures (and more). Respectfully, Jason Robertson
Guest guest
Hi Z'ev. The seminars I attended w Dr. Huang Bing Shan must have been between 91 and 96, I attended a few of his workshops. And the animal-horse workshops- treating and controlling the horses there. Maybe you were a senior student by a couple years.. So you remember Michael Zheng and his talented wife, and Dr. Kezhuang Zhao. I worked for Dr. Zhao in santa fe and albuqueque, filling and layering the pots with herbs, boiling and reboiling, reducing, mixing , filling bottles printing the labels, topping them off w glycerine, and heat shrinking the seals. Running stuff betwen the two places in my van. I spent a little time there. I was also as a student very poor, so michael let me live in the library and earn my way as maintenance person for the school and grounds. When I was staying in the library, a lot of nights, a big mutt of a dog, Winston, would come and sleep in the place near me. In daytime we loved to walk around the edges of the desert, he was a good companion. Sometimes he would whine and back out, because he knew we were into tough ground, esp heading west. Lots of crazy vicious dogs, he didn't want any part. He looked right in my face and whined, hearing their barking. I could tell you more, but I knew you were there, and it was a good education. I'm so glad for groups like this, to reconnect, and tho you might not have liked me, I was the guy who watered the grounds, and did car repair, etc. But when the the lord and the lightning, and rain came, I was free to not water the school. nature freed me to play a little bit, which meant work somewhere else. Thanks. --- On Fri, 2/6/09, <zrosenbe wrote: <zrosenbe Re: Shang Han Lun with Dr. Huang Huang Friday, February 6, 2009, 2:00 PM I don't remember that part, but I was there, but I remember it being close to 20 years ago.
