Pang Da Hai

Hello group,

I had prescribed pang da hai to an elderly patient for his hoarse

voice and chronic cough which is related to chronic sinus problems. I

had him take 3 seeds, steeped in hot water and sip it throughout the

day. He stated that it made him jittery and prevented him from

sleeping. He tried it on three different days and had the same

reaction.

I was not aware of this potential side effect. I haven't experienced

it, nor has anyone I know of, experienced it to my knowledge.

The new Bensky text doesn't mention any toxicity or side-effects, and

I didn't see any stimulants listed as active ingredients in the

herb's chemistry.

Any feed back would be appreciated. And any other recommendations for

an elderly man with chronic sinus, chronic cough and hoarse voice. He

is on a laundry list of meds (which possibly could be a cause for his

condition). I researched his meds, and didn't see cough/sinus as a

listed side effect.

Thank you,

-David Hahn, L.Ac.

Some high blood pressure medication have chronic cough (low grade- no

sputum) as a side effect. Haven't really found any herbal that

counters it.

It's ACE inhibitor type of blood pressure medications

Sometimes ARB type of blood pressure medication can cause chronic cough.

Some African Americans and Asians patients were easy impacted by this side

effect.

ACE and ARB are very commonly prescribed for protecting patients' kidney if

patients with history of diabetes.

You can ask patients to talk to their health care providers to change different

type of BP med.

This type of cough tend to be dry cough first thing in the morning.

I haven't found any herb can counters it.

It takes about 1 month to taper off the dry cough, after patients switch to

different BP meds.

I know the patent, Xichuanling, can often resolve phlegm in the lung problems.

However, it can make a person restless if they are very sensitive. This person

may need more grandmother type of remedy, eg, teaspoons of honey w cinnamon.

Doug,

You are probably referring to the yin xu type of cough that is a side

effect of ACE inhibitors. I only tried it in one patient, but the

Loquat Syrup from Planetary Formulas stopped the cough every time.
