Guest guest
Hi Michael, I had approached the California Acu Board with this very same question about a year ago, and received a very different reply from them than you did. They told me that, because the state regulations for acupuncture practice require tongue and pulse diagnosis, I couldn't legally make any recommendations as an acupuncturist without assessing the tongue and pulse. I had looked at your website around that time, and was intrigued to see that you have patients send you a photo of their tongue. I was wondering how you got around the issue of assessing the pulse... Anyway, I was looking at the feasibility of offering online consultations myself, and was dissuaded. I also was wondering about how to offer consultations to people living in states in which I wasn't licensed, and what kind of legal barriers there might be to that as well. I didn't ask the CA Acu Board about charging a fee for such consultations, and I was thinking along the lines of offering more general recommendations to interested parties, sort of like triage, rather than to offering to make herbal recommendations without seeing them. They did offer to review a proposal if I were to draft one and send it to them, but they said it was unlikely to be viewed favorably. I hope this is useful, and I am interested in hearing more on this issue, especially from practitioners who currently do this. The California Acupuncture board said there was no problem with this but then I've heard differently from some. I imagine it or we would not be covered by insurance.
