Does anyone have any research on how chinese medicine and in particular herbs

may be helpful with Von Willebrands. I have a patient who needs oral surgery

and has been advised that this is too high a risk unless performed at Mayo. The

patient also suffers debilitating menstrual issues, cramping, heavy bleediing

and irregular cycle length.

Chinese Diagnosis - Spleen Qi Xu failing to hold, Damp Stagnation, Lv Qi Yu.

Thanks in advance

my husband has this disease. And it involves everything that can go

wrong with blood: bleeding, stagnation and deficiency. he uses

yunanbaiayo to manage routine problems ( shaving cuts for example)

I also have a female patient with this disease: she exhibits liv qi as

her primary pattern.

thus, a modified chai hu long gu mu li tang for much of the month and

xue fu zhu yu tang jia jian has been helpful with menstruation.

hope this is helpful

pre-op? i dont know.

i know that yunnanbaiyao as been discussed on this board with some

controversy, but i do think that it is appropriate here. despite the

fact that it is septic, it can be used topically during surgery to

control bleeding. that would be a practical approach in my mind.

she will be on antibiotics afterward anyway.

I dont understand what the rationale is for the physician to be telling the

patient she can only have surgery at Mayo. Desmopressin is regularly used for

vWF disease, as a pre-op pharmacologic management. Was this advise from a

hematologist? You should tell your patient to seek a second opinion. Im not so

sure about trying to treat her pre-operatively with Chinese herbs, that seems to

be potentially putting yourself in a legally precarious position especially if

she has any bleeding complications during surgery.
