Who had the herb dog?

When I was first studying herbs with Ted Kaptchuk, Zoe Brenner, et

al, I recall a story being told that there was a famous herbalist that

used to study the effect of herbs by trying them out on his dog. While

I don't recommend such animal experimentation, I am looking for the

name of the legendary herbalist and the name of that poor dog.
