Guest guest
Hello to all CHA'ers and especially my fellow Yosan grads. I was presented with the opportunity to test out the potential of integrative medicine in a patient I am seeing, and of course the first source I felt to approach was CHA. So here goes: 4 yo boy with no relevant, previous medical history, presented with delayed motor development, with difficulty going up/down stairs and walking/running. He was recently diagnosed with Duchennes muscular dystrophy in which his prescribed treatment option is steroids. The parents are understandly very devastated, and want to try all options available. Since the residents and attendings I work with are aware of my education in TCM, I decided to take this case on to see if there is anything in the literature to support the use of TCM (or any other complimentary modalities) to potentially slow down the progression or even reverse the degeneration of DMD. I will perform my own literature search as well, but I am interested in finding out if anyone has first hand insight, preferably with some supporting evidence (but even anecdotal) on TCM (or other modalities) treatment of muscular dystrophy. And if you do, could you please post sources so I can research this for my patient. I appreciate any help available. Anton (currently neck deep in a MSIII surgical rotation)
Guest guest
Muscular Dystrophy was " cured " in cattle and horses during the 1950s, however, the treatment did NOT carry over to humans. Maybe try megadoses of selenium and other minerals. This is an alternative Western approach, and I have not had the opportunity to try it myself, as all my friends with MD have long since died. (Before I found out about it.) However, the people who told me about it, said that they had had success in human patients. I'll try to find their contact info, if you'd like. I have more specific, human related info that they sent me, however it is anecdotal. http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articlerender.fcgi?artid=1791618 The Prevention and Treatment of White Muscle Disease (Muscular Dystrophy) F. Guest guest
I have only treated MD with an adult onset for a year as a supervisor through one of the student clinics. I found that using the connection of the foot YangMing with the Chong as being the most effective. There definitely is a connection with Lung Yin and this may be more important to your young patient than my older one. Look up wei syndromes. It actually followed the patterns although you have to think a little deeper into the 8 extras, collateral symptoms etc... than taking the zang-fu at face value. I would like to think we helped the guy and hopefully slowed the progression but can't claim a cure. I don't think we used herbs or don't remember what they were. It's a difficult situation in any case, Anton, Doug > > > > > - > " ITS_ANTONBORJA " <its_antonborja > > Tuesday, September 22, 2009 7:03 AM > TCM and Duchennes Muscular dystrophy > > > > Hello to all CHA'ers and especially my fellow Yosan grads. > > > > I was presented with the opportunity to test out the potential of > > integrative medicine in a patient I am seeing, and of course the first > > source I felt to approach was CHA.
