Guest guest
Dear Z'ev and Shang-han Lunists: I found an article on a Chinese movie " Red Cliff " in the L.A. Times today. I do not recommend it because of its quarity but its back ground. If it comes to the theater near you, you have to see it! This movie is about General Cao Cao in the Three States Era. The date of the movie is 208 A.D. Accordiong to the prominent Chinese modern Shang-han Lunist, Jian Chao-chen, Zhang Zhong-jing, the author ofthe Shang-han Lun, was the Governor of Zhang-sha province in 207 and 208, and Jian believes Zhong-jing wrote the Shang-han Lun when he was the Governor. At least you will enjoy the fantacised (it's a movie!!) Epoch feeling, as if you go back to the Shang-han Lun era, I hope. By the way, I am trying to renew my website, shanghanlun.us, at this moment. I hope I can show you the totally renewed version within this year!! Yours, Shinjiro
Guest guest
It's one of the more amazing new epic historical Chinese films, based on the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. As well as being in the general time frame of Zhang Zhong Jing, the movie portrays Hua Tuo in the film treating the ill in few scenes- both in part one and two. Also, in part two it shows Zhuge Liang making Gui Zhi Tang for sick soldiers suffering from Shanghan (which in the Chinese subtitled version translated as 'typhoid'). I was actually just watched it again last night.... On Nov 26, 2009, at 5:56 PM, acupunsk wrote: > Dear Z'ev and Shang-han Lunists: I found an article on a Chinese > movie " Red Cliff " in the L.A. Guest guest
Eric, have you watched both the English version and the original version (twice as long) ? What are some major editing decisions that were made? Guest guest
I got the original version with subtitles in China, and wasn't aware that it was imported or cut till now. It's a complex story, well worth the 5-6 hours to watch the whole thing. Surely even the unedited movie cut much from the book- where the Red Cliff battle is just a segment. I thought the portrayal of Zhuge Liang especially was great- better than many of the other Chinese Three Kingdoms films out there. He's one of my favorite characters in Chinese history, a master of the ways of Heaven and Earth, from medicine to music to strategy, and now enshrined as a Daoist saint in Chengdu...
