Guest guest
I have a young, otherwise healthy 28 year old woman who suffered from a serious allergic reaction that caused her eye to puff up on one side. She previously had two incidents of eyelid edema that resolved on their own, but this was severe. The hospital put her on IV antibiotics, to which she got a serious rash and did nothing for the eye. So a day later she went to a hospital emergency room where they told her it was an allergic reaction and gave her a shot of Prednisone. The Prednisone resolved the swelling and the rash, but she has had an arrhythmia ever since, with occasional racing strong enough that she went to the emergency room by ambulence again thinking she was dying. They diagnosed a panic attack, but the panic follows the heartbeat irregularity and she had no other emotional reason for a panic attack. She works as a waitress and is on her feet for up to 10 hours a day. Good diet, of the Sally Fallon-Paleolithic type. Somewhat yang deficient- runs cold. Fit, mesomorph, tongue show mild cracks on Lung and St/SP areas, wet Liver/Gallbladder area that is somewhat darker. Tongue body is pale red (normal) with thin white coat. Perhaps a darkening on the edge of the tongue by the heart area but nothing I'd take note of if she didn't have symptoms. Slight coloration to sublingual veins. Her pulse is moderate in depth, vessel size and rate except that every 16 beats or so the heartbeat dies off then takes a swirl or so before re-establishing itself on beat 20. The heart races frequently, even while sitting and eating quietly. This is most distressing because she feels like she is going to die. My theory is that she has some liver excess that flared with the eye after an allergen, and that the Prednisone may have unmasked a benign heart murmur, especially after an antibiotic that she was probably allergic to (as yet still unidentified). Cardiac irregularities may be caused by Prednisone, but this isn't a long term use of it. I gave her a simple hawthorn, tilia, milky oat and astragalus tincture. She is taking colloidal magnesium, fish oil to 1000 mg DHA, and vitamin D in 5000 iu doses. I have her eating goji berries and walnuts, bone soups and enough protein to warm her up. Is doing liver massage in the mornings. Acupuncture on Kidneys, Liver, Ren, Heart and Pericardium. Any ideas? I'd like to nourish her valves and heart tissue, and address the arrhythmia but I was reluctant to use stronger herbs until I've thought it out more. Karen S. Guest guest
I would consider moxa as well. You didn't say how long ago she got this. I would first consider Qi stagnation around Ren 14. Herbs would be of the Chai Hu variety rather than Ren Shen to start. I know from personal experience it can go on for weeks and it sucks. However, make sure that she is sleeping enough or more than enough, potassium/bananas and lots of fluids. And less stress. doug , creationsgarden1 wrote: > > > I have a young, otherwise healthy 28 year old woman who suffered from a > serious allergic reaction that caused her eye to puff up on one side. Guest guest
I forgot to mention the duration and to give an update: It has been 2 1/2 weeks since the steroids were given and a little over 3 weeks from the initial allergic reaction. She got blurry vision, and an aching jaw which radiated down to her hands right after the steroids, but the rash and pins and needles from the antibiotic reaction subsided. This week she only mentioned that her eye felt dry, she gets some night sweats and she has been having palpitations. Fluids and fat consumption are good. She has a history of sinus infections and expansive right sided headaches since youth, worse with red wine and bright light. Sulfites and cheese may be triggers. Has been having vivid dreams recently which bother her. , creationsgarden1 wrote: > > > I have a young, otherwise healthy 28 year old woman who suffered from a > serious allergic reaction that caused her eye to puff up on one side.
