Guest guest
The teaching that I have received under various sifu all agree to " body intelligence " - irrespective of school of thought. Therefore my response will be one with that assumption in mind. Remember that all phlegm/damp comes from post-heaven earth, and will tend to follow the natural cycle of being transfered to the LU. Maybe swallowing phlegm has some merit in that if you swollow and digest it, it sends a signal to post-heaven earth that no more phlegm/damp needs to be or should be created. In conventional medicine phlgem is seen as a result of an immunological response.... the body's way of defending itself.... that leads to the accumulation of immune defense cells in thick fluid. I guess this is the natural process on the road back to healthy LU since the mucus actually helps for dust and other foreign particles settled in the LU to bind to it so that it can be cleared. In any case, most medical professionals (be it conventional, traditonsl, or shaman) that I know all agree that the gut is the root of the immune system. Soo maybe just maybe, swollowing phlegm sends a message to earth that damp production should cease, and furth digesting it back into metal (the large intestine - root of immune system)lets the body know that enough phlegm is present in the body to clear away and make healthy its partner the LU. OR a simplier explaination... maybe there is something in phlegm that stimulates digestive enzymes that would aid the LU (case of mother nurturing child along the Qi cycle). Guest guest
Seems to me if you have phlegm the thing to do is spit it out. Guest guest
Doug, In principle, you are right. HOWEVER, I must tell you that I have come across a number of patients who either have a problem (for social reasons) with spitting out phlegm, or (literally!) don't know how to! Generally the latter group tend to be have very  sensitive laryngeal and pharyngeal tissue, and in almost all cases they have suffered emotional trauma. Intestingly, John Upledger calls the area around the hyoid, " the avenue of expression " and feels that unless trauma is dealt with there, problems such as phlegm, salivation and swollowing will not be resolved. Often I also find  Plum Pit Qi with these patients. Yet when treating them, the usual formula Ban Xia Hou Po Tang must be modified, as these patients are almost always vacuous, and BXHPT is contraindicated in such a case. Really interesting topic. My very best,    ________________________________ Fri, April 16, 2010 9:56:44 AM Re: Phlegm Swollowing Cont....  Seems to me if you have phlegm the thing to do is spit it out.
