Guest guest
Enter your vote today! A new poll has been created for the group: If you are not yet a vegetarian, what is it that keeps you eating animal flesh? If you are a vegetarian who falls of the veggie wagon, what causes this to happen? Give us your best shot at your primary reason! (There are two more polls - and they are related - give them a go too, okay??) o I see no reason why I should not eat flesh. o I am unsure about the healthiness of a flesh-less diet. o I have to eat out a lot in business and/or travel. o Family and friends are more important to me than diet. o Vegetables get boring all the time. o My physician and/or spiritual counsellor advised more of the flesh. o It's patriotic to eat flesh. o My spouse, partner or girlfriend/boyfriend eats flesh. o Eating flesh looks cool. o I want to help the farmers make a living. o I hate eating flesh but all the animals would feel unloved if I didn't respect them by eating them. o Other. To vote, please visit the following web page: /surveys?id=732326 Note: Please do not reply to this message. Poll votes are not collected via email. To vote, you must go to the web site listed above. Guest guest
I think we have respected the rules of this group, and now it's time to respect those who are NOT vegetarian... I find this email with the discriptor very insulting. I personally came here to learn about vegetarian food and I respected your rules completely. This is not a fair way to respect the view of people who do NOT choose to be vegans. On 11 Sep 2004 21:00:37 -0000, wrote: > > Enter your vote today! Guest guest
LOL Read it again. It is also for us veggies. No one is perfect - and we all fall off the wagon now and then in one way or another - even a tiny little bit - intentionally or unintentionally. There's not a reason here that I have not heard a veggie use as to why it has happened - perhaps in different words, but I did not want to make it nationally or culturally specific ;=) No disrespect of anyone was intended, but if I have apologies to make it would be to the animals; these are frivolous reasons frivolously stated, and intentionally so. I rather think they would forgive me, though ;=) Lighten up, hon - we love ya! Best, Pat ;=) > I think we have respected the rules of this group, and now it's time > to respect those who are NOT vegetarian... I find this email with > the discriptor very insulting. Guest guest
For me, in order of priority: 1. Other: tempeh/tofu tastes better. 2. Healthy lifestyle. 3. Concern for animal rights. 4. Concern for Ecology/Environment. Kevin
Guest guest
Linda, I,m not yet a vegetarian but positively heading in that direction. Personally, I didn't take offense at the bulleted topics. I have actually heard people try to make a serious argument for the patriotic slant. And likewise for 'supporting our pig farmers'. The unloved animal point I just assumed was a stab at humor, no offense taken on my part. My only issue with the list is that it didn't hit any of my key issues, which are: - I am in transition, breaking long-standing eating habits, - some meat doesn't strike me as particularly offensive, such as: fish, snails, mollusks in general, - I'm still learning about vegetarianism, where I stand Kevin , Linda Panter <lipant@g...> wrote: > I think we have respected the rules of this group, and now it's time > to respect those who are NOT vegetarian... Guest guest
Dear Linda, I find your anger at this poll very interesting, and not wanting to offend you further I am hesitant to respond, but thought it appropriate since you are probably not the only person here who apparently eats meat. First off nobody is trying to insult or disrespect you. Being a student of human nature I find people's reactions to confrontation of their own belief system interesting. The purpose of this poll was simply to get to know better how the people in this group were leaning, so that we as moderators could in fact best direct the group. I do not know, but I am supposing that you read the reason for eating meat and perhaps were offended at what you felt were snide comments about people eating meat? IF this is what you were thinking you would be wrong. I personally have had a fiancee break up with me because I refused to eat meat at her parents home on Thanksgiving and she felt I was being disrespectful to her parents. II also have friends who go to business meetings with some high powered individuals and not wanting to feel or seem different, they eat meat with them. There are in fact spiritual advisors who do preach and teach that eating meat is why animals are here, and we should honor that. There are people who eat meat, or are vegeterian simply because those that are around them eat the same way. There is nothing here meant of ridicule or belittle your life choice. The idea was to have some introspection and some honest communication, nothing more. Thank you for your understanding. I have left the polll on this e-mail os that you could refer to it in case you had deleted the prior message. Guest guest
Eric, I am a vegan, and I was also wondering why the word flesh was used. I sounds radical to me . I know the purpose of this group is not to conform folks, and I'd never push my beliefs of being a vegan on anyone. However, I would love to see the world eating a plant based diet. My feeling is that could help people who are considering giving up meat make that decision, but not if we are offensive to meat eaters. Guest guest
> . . .I was also wondering why the word flesh was used. I > sounds radical to me . Not at all ;=) please see my post before this one. > I know the purpose of this group is not to conform folks Indeed not. It's to share food ideas, recipes, eating experiences, info on ingredients and (just possibly) other matters relating to vegetarianism, such as this one. >and I'd never push my beliefs of being a vegan on anyone. Oh I know what you mean ;=) It's kinda pointless anyway, isn't it? But this is of course a vegetarian list and we can and should all feel safe to speak as vegetarians here. > However, I would love to see the world eating a plant based diet. That'd be great ;=) > My feeling is that could help people who are considering > giving up meat make that decision It might do that, and it would be assumed, rightly or wrongly, that anyone vegetarian or otherwise on this list is sympathetic to vegetarian ideas and values even if they do not at this time embrace them. It was not however the intent, at the founding of this list, to use it to convert anyone to anything except perhaps some delicious recipes ;=) People will choose their own way. > but not if we are offensive to meat eaters. This list is set up for vegetarians. Meat eaters, in the western world at least, are around 97 per cent of the population, according to how you count em and who is doing the counting and what you count as 'meat'. That's not exactly an oppressed minority. They're pretty well secure in who they are, I think. As for offending them by the poll, remember it was mainly for *vegetarians* - the majority of our membership. Anyone reading it can see that - it states it clearly. Take another look, okay? ;=) I would hope that non-vegetarians on this list would not be offended by the idea that this is a *vegetarian* list. The list description does not say that it is to learn how to cook spicy *vegetable* dishes - it says spicy *vegetarian* dishes. Non-vegetarians are of course welcome, as are vegans and other vegetarians ;=) I think Mark has already covered most of the other issues relating to this topic. And I have written in as well. If you and everyone else would kindly re-read all that before posting again on this matter, it would save us all a lot of time. I'm not trying to be rude here, but there are some people who find this all very tedious and would like to get on with things. Actually, the polls were initiated to save having to spend a lot of time on list about some rather basic matters - as well as to find out where you are all at so that we can perhaps adjust the list to members' specific needs or interests. We shall be able to do that better once the polls have been completed by as many people as possible. And now I am going for lunch. Best, Pat ;=)
Guest guest
Here's my take. It is purely correct semantics. Flesh is the soft edible parts of animals while meat can be used to refer to the soft edible parts of anything, such as the 'meat' of a nut. So flesh is linguistically correct. Kevin > I am a vegan, and I was also wondering why the word flesh was used.
Guest guest
Thank you Cyndi, I joined this group as a 'meateater' several weeks ago to get some good veg recipes and because I wanted to eat healthier. Since then I have gone vegetarian except for 'some' seafood. I appreciated the fact that nobody preached at first and I chose to give up meat because I feel it is unhealthy. Your point is very valid - " My feeling is that could help people who are considering giving up meat make that decision, but not if we are offensive to meat eaters. " That approach is precisely what turned me. Thank you for not feeling the need to downgrade others because they have differing views. The fact is most people in the 'Western' world eat meat, and while thier habits might be unhealthy, and to some unethical/immoral, viewing them and treating them with disdain will not further some vegetarians' so-called cause. Thank you again, (the other) Eric

Guest guest
It is interesting that the the German word for meat is fleish. Rules for Kasruth (what foods are Kosher for observant Jews) use the words fleishic (meat), milchic (dairy), and parve (neither). >Here's my take. Btw, does that get through to people, the 'nothing with eyes' line? I've tried 'nothing with a face' but then there's an argument about what is a 'face' - you know, looking for a legal loophole LOL And if one says 'just plants' (although we aren't vegan, that sometimes just sometimes solves the problem of what they can expect you to eat) then 75 per cent of people still say something like,'And of course eggs and cheese and *fish* - you DO eat fish???' Guest guest
I have been away for a while and came across this thread and followed it down, just to see how it got started. First, I agree with Linda about the poll. I am not vegetarian, though I do eat a lot less meat than before. I left another vegetarian listserve because all I saw on it was " carnivore " bashing. Like most other things in life, including relgion, sex, and politic; eating habits can be quite controversial. I am not particularly interested in why a person is or is not vegetarian. I am fairly knowledgeable about the variety of reasons. I think there is enough controvery in the world and I would like a retreat from that. What I like most about this website are the recipes. Guest guest
I am trying very hard to become a vegan, and have fallen off the wagon alot this year, and bashed myself abit. I don't like bashing others, and I admit I've seen a couple almost close insults on here. I realize some people don't like " meat subsitutes " but they don't need to make the rest of us feel bad about it, especially since some of us are trying to urge their loved ones to change with them, and have to use meat subsitutes to do so. But, I don't see anything wrong with this particular poll, I find it intrigueing to study the different reasons people come up with, especially when so many meat eaters don't care about one's feelings and often use phrases like " If it tastes good I don't really care about the animal " . --- " Doug " <cyclist451 wrote: I have been away for a while and came across this thread and followed it down, just to see how it got started.
