Guest guest
Well good luck to you on your switch to veganism ;=) That's great. Falling of the wagon is good practice for getting back on, I think, and little harm done if it means you feel braver about it all next time round! But about the meat substitutes: I know many people use them - and many people don't. I don't like them myself. I'm not morally opposed to them, I just haven't found any I like. Me personally, that is ;=) (Exception: a great restaurant about 25 mins from here that does wonderful meat substitutes that aren't too authentic but can fool many a non-veggie into thinking it's the real thing (cuz it's Thai cuisine and the spices do a lot of camouflage). If you like meat substitutes, why not - it hurts no one, is kind to animals, and it is good for your health. They can be a bit pricey, but not everyone is on a budget and in any case some people are careful shoppers. Whatever it takes to keep you happy while on a veggie diet I figure is okay ;=) But me, I don't use em at home. But of course I don't consider tofu and tempeh, for example, to be substitutes for anything but foods in their own right! I used to eat them long before I was vegetarian - and that's going back awhile. Some people, it must be said, are turned off by anything that looks like or tastes like meat ;=) Gotta sympathize with the fact that there are fewer foods, therefore, from which they can pick. I understand that some of the burgers crumbled into lasagne, chillie, stews, etc. are really really good and what the commercials might call 'man pleasers.' Good luck with that! Best, Pat ;=) > I am trying very hard to become a vegan, and have fallen off the wagon alot >this year, and bashed myself abit. Guest guest
I use meat substitutes, but my husband does not want them - they remind him too much of meat. For some reason, he readily accepts veggie burgers but not the other products. I know that the fake meats are healthier than the real thing, and as long as I know that no animal was killed to make them I can deal with having them. I was a meat eater for the first 50 years of my life, so I miss the texture and familiarity and if I can have substitutes that reminds me of things I have always had, it is fine with me. Guest guest
I agree! I love Garden burgers, but my hubby prefers Morning Star products. I make my own soy milk, and use the okara to make burgers, but.......I still prefer the commercial products!!! sigh Cyndi >^. .^< On Sun, 19 Sep 2004 23:14:58 -0400 " Maida Genser " <maidawg writes: I use meat substitutes, but my husband does not want them - they remind him too much of meat. Guest guest
Hi, I'm Angel, new to the group, and have been a veggie for 8 years. I'm very picky about the meat substitutes, but I love Morninstar's garden patties, 'suasage' patties, and veggie dogs. The boca veggie italian sausages (the big ones) are GREAT for garbage sandwiches (cut the top of a hoagie bun, insert cookked sausage, top with hot spaghetti sauce, suateed onion and green pepper and lay a slice of provolone over the whole thing and heat to melt a little---yummmm). Worthington turkey slices are very good too for 'lunchmeat' sandwiches. - Cyndi Horstmanshof Monday, September 20, 2004 6:43 AM Re: Meat Substitutes / was New poll for I agree! Guest guest
Try Yves Veggie Cusine, it is fabulous! I love the chili dogs topped with soy cheese. The Thai Chicken is also quite good (they all are) when I first had it I swore there were hunks of meat in it, but it was just the texture...lol!
