Guest guest
halo all (wave)...i am so happy to be a member of this group and i cannot wait to begin to share and be shared with, as well, great vegetarian recipes, especially indian...is there any other kind of indian cooking??? i have but one request and a statement... statement: i am using a mac, os 9.2. i hope that explains it all, but if not....i am unable to read some of the text i have seen; i.e., the email sent to me explaining the rules had several undecipherable symbols which, i'm sure, if i stare at them long enough, will become understandable. request: would it be at all possible for those of you who are using windows-type pcs to be careful to NOT use symbols which are singular to your type of computer? also, i have become aware, a lot of you have a key which represents 1/2 and 1/4 which show up as <pi> and ? (small pi and capital pi). would it be too difficult to ask for you to use the individual number and slash key(s) instead of that particular key?? you know...in a group this large, i'm sure there are other users like me but they have been, well, kinda nervous or something, about enquiring about it. me, i have foot in mouth disease and have no problem with enquiring about anything. ;o) thanks, in advance. gypsy
Guest guest
Dear 'Gypsy' - Hello and welcome ;=) You must have just joined this afternoon, right? Because I have only just received a notice of your subscribing to the group from and you are not yet listed in the Members roster. Now why not introduce yourself to the group for a start? That'd be nice - we're a friendly group here and we do like to hear from everyone if we can. You must have been very busy since joining to have found so many problems, and I do feel that that is extremely unfortunate. We like our members to be happy. Btw I wrote the Rules that you find so difficult - on my Mac (OS 10.3.5) - so perhaps you could write to -owner copying in the parts you found undecipherable and either Mark or I will try to help you. shouldn't be hard! LOL And perhaps you could also say which recipes in particular you found incomprehensible? Mark or I can take a look at them and see if there is a problem. > you know...in a group this large, i'm sure there are other users > like me but they have been, well, kinda nervous or something, > about enquiring about it. Entirely possible. I am a very frightening person. >me, i have foot in mouth disease and have no problem with enquiring about anything. ;o) Yes, I see that. However, you will also understand that this is best sorted out offlist. Meanwhile, I am sure that everyone will be able to continue as before - unless we find insuperable problems ;=) (More rules? I can hear the Members screaming from here: No More Flaming Rules, Pat!) Meanwhile, as I say, perhaps now that you have raised these problems and made these requests you will introduce yourself to the group?? I too, as you see, have no problem enquiring about anything LOL We do hope you enjoy the list. All best wishes, Pat - List Owner and Co-Moderator

Guest guest
> OMG, PAT!!! Can you translate this? I've no idea what she's talking about! (did I ever mention that I'm computer illiterate?) Beth ROFLMBO Sure you are, Bethie, sure you are ;=) But in case someone really needs to know, it amounts to this: some computers have a symbol for one- quarter - ya know, that little one over the little four with a baby line in between? Well, also for one-half. And on some *other* computers, that kinda goes into strange symbols. Most of us can read them on the rare occasion they occur, or we ask. What our new member is requesting is that everyone avoid using those symbols on their computers - those using Windows - and use instead something like: 1/2 - that is to say, the large numberal one followed by the forward slash followed by the next numeral (in this case either 2 or 4). I thought everyone already did this, but we await a report on the offending files. Just continue as you are, Beth - no new Rules have been made on this list today ;=) and I'm not sure they're needed. (I'm going to look at the Files and see, though, in which case I'll have to put hotsauce on my words and scarf them down!) If they are needed, I will send out a proper request and an amendment to the Rules in the usual way - okay? Bet you can't wait! Best, Pat ;=)
Guest guest
Hi all, I just wanted to chime in on the special characters issue. It is constantly a problem for me on this list too, as I use Macs running both OS 9 and OS X. The issue is that special characters typed on a PC don't translate correctly to the non-PC world. Any character that you type on your PC by holding down the Control key and typing another character will not display correctly on a Mac. Or, in some programs one can go to a menu where you can select " special " characters such as trademark symbols, bullets, measurements, etc. -- and again, us Mac folks won't be able to see those correctly. To us they are seen as weird computer code or bizarre characters. So I wouldn't personally classify this as a new rule, just more of a courtesy to those of us out here who don't use PCs. We are unable to correctly read measurements in your recipes unless you literally type a number 1, then a slash, and then a number 2 to represent 1/2, versus holding down the Command key and typing another character, or selecting from a pop-up menu. Hope that helps clarify the issue!
