Guest guest
i *finally* went out and tracked down some tempeh. i got it from the local organic food store. it was 'Green Cuisine Marinated Tempeh' (http://www.greencuisine.com/tempeh.html). i was so excited to try this for the first time! last night i chopped it up in cubes and fried it in a little bit of oil in the wok and then added it to my usual black beans and rice dish. here's the thing - IT STUNK! really badly. the odor was so offensive while i was cooking it my husband and children were like " WHAT is that smell?? " . i was almost afraid to taste it - i did, tasted pretty tasteless, a little mushroomy maybe, so i went ahead and addded it to the dinner and we ate it...it was okay.... but i have to say if all tempeh smells like that i am not sure i can use it again. is this normal or did i do something wrong? (btw, the expiration date was mid Dec'04 so it isn't like it was spoiled or anything. interested in what anyone thinks, or any tips. Guest guest
I've been enjoying tempeh for a few years and it smells a little before it's cooked, but not after its cooked for me. I've enjoyed the nutty flavour of the tempeh, but I use a different brand, so maybe it's your brand and/or it wasn't very fresh. I usually purchase Lightlife tempeh (Garden Veggie)... http://www.lightlife.com/tempeh.html Charlie , Jo <jaeger6@s...> wrote: > i *finally* went out and tracked down some tempeh. i got it from the local > organic food store. it was 'Green Cuisine Marinated Tempeh' > (http://www.greencuisine.com/tempeh.html). i was so excited to try this for > the first time! > > last night i chopped it up in cubes and fried it in a little bit of oil in > the wok and then added it to my usual black beans and rice dish. > > here's the thing - IT STUNK! really badly. the odor was so offensive while i > was cooking it my husband and children were like " WHAT is that smell?? Guest guest
Indeed, Charlie is right. Tempeh is a *fermented* soy bean product, it should be noted, and foods etc. that are fermented have a distinctive scent and flavour. We eat tempeh all the time here in this household ;=) It is absolutely delicious! See: http://www.epicurious.com/cooking/how_to/food_dictionary/search?query= tempeh & Operation=food (The Epicurious link is in the Links on our webpage.) tempe; tempeh [TEHM-pay] A fermented SOYBEAN cake, with a texture similar to that of soft TOFU and a yeasty, nutty flavor. The high-protein tempe is popular in Asian cooking, as well as for VEGETARIAN diets. It's commonly available at health-food stores. Best, Pat ;=) > I've been enjoying tempeh for a few years and it smells a little > before it's cooked, but not after its cooked for me.
