Guest guest
No doubt many of us have tried some of the so-called fakin' bacon and other meat substitute products, yes? If nothing else out of curiosity... I used to work in a health food store, so I had the opportunity to try a lot of things, but fakin bacon is an easy thing to make at home. Here's what you need: Tempeh Liquid smoke Soy sauce Brewer's yeast Large baking dish Skillet Your favorite oil Slice the tempeh lengthwise into long thin strips, taking care that they aren't too thin, or they will fall apart. Pour enough soy sauce to cover the bottom of the baking dish, and add just a dash of liquid smoke, then stir. Lay tempeh strips in the baking dish, and marinate in soy sauce for at least an hour, turning every 10-15 minutes. Make sure there is enough liquid to just cover the strips, and add more as needed. Next, heat up 1/8 cup oil in a skillet over at medium high, and place one or two test strips in. Sprinkle the strips with brewers yeast. Check in a few minutes to see if the strips have browned on the other side, and add oil as needed. Don't let the strips burn. Sprinkle more brewers yeast on the strips after each turn, as the yeast will help the tempeh achieve a nice crisp. The brewers yeast may loose nutritional value being cooked like this, but it adds a great flavor to the strips, and as mentioned, allows them to become nice and crisp! These are great alongside tofu scramble, and my crispy tofu melt for a Super-Duper Vegan Breakfast, or what I call " Super Breakfast " ... Everyone's stove works a little different, so adjust your heat as needed, and enjoy this tasty morning side dish! Josh
