Hi all,

As some of you know, I am a recent convert to the veggie way.

My husband and I are planting a vegetable garden for the first time this year

and are very excited about that! In addition, I have decided that I want to

grow several herbs in containers outside to cook with.

In that spirit, can you all guide me to what I might plant? My favorite herb of

all time is sage and I use it a lot. But can you tell me what your top 5 or so

favorite herbs to cook with are?

It would be a great help to me!

Thanks in advance,

Colleen (in southern IL)

As I get ready to plant my own garden this year....I also love sage but had to

remove it from my garden to 2 containers because it grew out of control! My

chive plant will NOT die. Basil is easy to grow - mine often grows a 2-3?

feet tall & I have a hard time using it all - one can only eat so much pesto! -

so I give it away & freeze it. Tarragon has been difficult but delicious when

it cooperates, lol. Oregano & parsley are a must, imo. I love rosemary but it

always dies. I guess it's just an annual in NY unlike the bushes & bushes

growing wild in Las Vegas. Grr. Just like lavender. It's amazing. What

else? Try everything you like & see what grows best. OH! Crap, I almost forgot

- THYME!!!! One of my faves - use it in most everything. Go for it!!! Have

fun!!! Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. Bigtime spring fever this week. But it's back to NY

for me tonight.

Hi,

For culinary purposes, I like

basil (genovese is supposed to be best for pesto but I

usually grow several different varieities, including

thai, etc.)

bay laurel

chives

marjoram

mint (I grow a number of different varieties but primarily

use peppermint and spearmint)

oregano (I have several syrian oregano plants growing plus

at least one other variety)

parsley

rosemary

sage

tarragon

thyme (I grow English and German)

lavender is nice to grow too but I don't use it as much

for culinary purposes.

I grow other herbs but these are the first that come

to mind. Bay Laurel seems to me to take a while to

grow so some of the others are better for quicker

rewards. You can grow garlic in pots also. Garlic

is always good to have, IMHO.

Hi Colleen,

Among the herbs that I grow here in Vancouver BC and find indispensable are:

Basils (regular, Thai and lime)

Thyme (regular and lemon)

Greek oregano

Bay

Rosemary

Tarragon

Parsley

I experiment with others, but these are must haves in my garden. The bay and

rosemary have been growing outdoors without protection now for over 5 years.

Results will vary according to hardiness zone!

Cheers,

Craig

I love to have agood show of coriander just outside the door in the summer. Just

rubbing a sprig between ones fingers in the morning is a fine way to start the

day. I keep meaning to make a coriander soup when I have enough.
