Guest guest
> 6/ Whereabouts do you live? In Kingston Upon Hull, a gray little town > with a repugnant accent! For a little town it is one of the ten biggest cities in England (Seventh or Eight I think). I had lived there for four-or-so years until the summer and apart from the lack of decent Veggie places (coming up) I really liked the place. The problem is that it is out of the way and so often misses out on a lot. I was back last weekend for the test against Australia and plan to return for some FC games next year (which to the uninitiated is a Rugby League team, not soccer). > 7/ How good a place is it for vegans? Not being one yet, don't know. > Not too bad as far as I know, if you have access to a car for the > supermarkets, otherwise it's expensive to rely on the whole food > stores each day. You don't need a car for all the supermarkets, Buses stop right outside the front door of Asda on Hessle Road, while they go directly to Asda Kingswood and Bilton, and to Tesco. Safeway (Willerby) and Sainsbury (practically in Hessle) are a bit of a nuisance while Morrissons on Holderness Road is easily accessible by bus. Both Sainbury's and Tesco's do home delivery in the city. I don't drive but managed to get by fine. There is a local organic food co-operative who do box deliveries each week, I can find the details if you are interested - they have a web site - which is good value, they also deliver some vegan items. There is a lack of decent health food stores though, the best seems to be Grain Wholefoods on Newland Ave, Hull Foods on Princes Ave was the best but they've closed down. The guy who runs it seems to do that quite often though, and then after a year-or-so it springs up somewhere else on the street so keep an eye open for it. For eating out there is only really two places. The Zoo is a cafe off Newland Ave and you really have to look out for it, there's a sort of drive way between a couple of shops just north of the railway bridge and they are down there on the left. Not much for vegans but they do have options and will adept. Fiddleheads were great but closed down years ago. They were in the city centre opposite Trinity Church so were really convenient. The other place is Hitchcock's which is fantastic. One sitting at 8:15pm but it's an all you can eat vegetarian buffet (with vegan options) for a fixed fee of £12 (concessions for students, unemployed etc.). The first person to make a booking for a given night picks the theme for the food so it might be Chinese, Italian or something more exotic. Great place, and well raved about in vegan food guides. I will also mention the Sawasdee Thai takeaway on Newland Ave, who deliver within an appropriate radius, who can do anything meat on the menu with Tofu (as well as the prawn batter starter which can be done with veg and tofu), if you say you are vegan they will happily adapt and leave out anything unsuitable (egg, MSG, etc.), very nice too.
