How to stay away from ice cream

Tasha,

More power to you in your decision to become vegan. When I decided to become

vegan, cheese was the hardest thing to give up for me, but I can relate to how

it must feel for you. Especially the part about being the only one who is

vegan/vegetarian in your household, since I was the only no-meat eater I knew

for a couple of years after I made that choice.

There are many brands of nondairy frozen desserts that can take the place of ice

cream. The trick may be finding them where you are. Your grocer may be open to

suggestions if there aren't options currently available. These things are

increasing in popularity. My favorites are made by Turtle Mountain

(www.turtlemountain.com), especially their " Purely Decadent " line, which

includes the Praline Pecan that I had last night. I got that because the co-op

here (Ashland, Oregon) didn't have Cherry Nirvana, which is vivid with black

cherries and thin pieces of dark chocolate. The Chocolate Brownie Almond and

Mint Chocolate Chip are also good. I also like Freezee's (www.freezees.com)

No-Butter Pecan to make floats with a nice natural root beer for something close

to a " brown cow " which would be root beer and black walnut flavored frozen

ice-cream-type dessert combined. Freezee's frozen desserts are not soy based,

but rather cashew based, which is a nice alternative to having every alternative

to dairy being soy based.

Another alternative to ice cream is to buy bananas when they're ripe and

sweetest - and cheapest - and freeze them peeled, then put them through a food

grinder or champion juicer without the screen. What comes out is " banana ice

cream, " cold, sweet, smooth, rich and ready to be topped with chocolate or carob

syrup or berries. Of course, for a little spice, when you make your chocolate

syrup, which can be as easy as melting organic dark chocolate chips, you can add

just a little cayenne, which goes with anything chocolate....

Peace,

Tom

Rather yummy.

There is a cookbook for non-dairy treats that I plan to get:

" Vice Cream: Over 70 Sinfully Delicious Dairy-Free Delights " by Jeff

Rogers

The one recipe I saw, from another list, was completely vegan and I

assume they are all vegan. I haven't tried it yet, so nothing to report

for now, but it looks nummy.

Tasha, you're welcome. People in this group love good food, and

according to that last poll, 35% of us are vegan, so you'll find lots

of ideas that'll help you in your new veganism.

A couple of more ice cream replacements came to mind. Another brand to

look into: Soy Cream by Double Rainbow (www.doublerainbow.com) comes

in 8 different flavors, including a Very Cherry Chocolate Chip which

is very similar to that Cherry Nirvana I meantioned in my last post. I

also love their Blueberry, which I just had a pint of today. That one

is good with Izze's Sparkling Blueberry (www.izze.com) for a vivid

blueberry float that has the health benefits of blueberries.

Also, if you got a source for good flavored frozen berries, one ice

cream alternative is to simply take some frozen berries, add

sweetening if needed, and then pour on a rich kind of vanilla soymilk.

Let that sit for a little while, then start smooshing the still mostly

frozen berries with a spoon until the soymilk is infused with the

berry juice. That makes a great meal on a hot day.

BTW, if you find a source of good blueberries, they're also good in a

sweet and savory sauce for tempeh and tofu. This is something I do by

eye, but the ingredients are:

Blueberries

Onion

Jalepenio

Sage

Sweetener, usually evaporated cane juice

Sesame oil

Kitchen Bouque, which is vegan though often used in roasts - it is

essentially a parsnip concentrate

Source of saltiness, such as salt or miso

Liquid hickory or mequite smoke

Vinegar

Cook this down to the desired consistancy. Put on broiled slabs of

tempeh or tofu with a dark brown brown rice....

Peace,

Tom

Howard Lyman, at the July 1997 Vegan Society conferrence at the

Evergreen State College in Olympia, talked about a simple

mathematical formula for a revolution: All each vegan had to do was

help one other person become vegan each year, and the geometrical

progression would spell a fundamental paradigm shift thorough our

society, since so much is effected by the raising of livestock

animals for food. So what could be more revolutionary than talking

about vegan desserts? (I just heard today that Howard Lyman is doing

a tour down the left coast next month, and will be here in Ashland,

Oregon on September 30th...)
