Guest guest
> Here are a few pages discussing why > honey is not vegan. Good sources of info, Gary. On this list we assume that vegans are defined, in part, by consuming no honey. My feeling about honey is that it is, even when no bees die (and I'd challenge even the kindest beekeeper to manage that - after all, there's only one queen in a hive, and some bees do get hurt in other ways) we would still be exploiting the bees by taking their food. It was not made by them for us. Additionally, for those who care, pure pollen without bee intervention might be just fine <sneeze> but once gathered by bee labour and transformed by bee spit it becomes an animal product - and vegans don't use animal products. By definition. Likewise, for a non-food comparison, silk - where the worms spin the silk and then die for their trouble. Those who disagree are entitled to their opinion, but this very ethical stance on the part of lifestyle vegans cannot be shurgged off. And this is why when we mark something Vegan in our Files we make sure that it does not contain honey any more than it does egg or dairy. Other dishes, ovo or lacto or ovo- lacto, may contain honey or not. Those who call themselves Vegan but feel that they can consume honey are always welcome to add it to their own dishes in their own kitchen. Thanks again for the info.
