Some of the containers are not screw on, and this stuff smells so you want it to seal tight with no leakage. You can buy it at Indian and Middle Eastern grocers. Amen to that too - I had it happen once - loose top and asafoetida all through my cupboard. Not pretty to smell in such large quantities. Very nice to use, however - I keep it in as a matter of course. And yes, Madhur Jaffrey uses it. Another fan of Madhur Jaffrey! Great ;=) Best, Pat
Guest guest
Recently, there has been mixed feelings on the spice asafoetida. It is one of the best herbs if not the best for reducing gas. i don't think it is a coincidence that many dhals use asafoetida in the recipe. It would go hand in hand with the previous post. It is often used in place of garlic in recipes. Gurubandhu If you cannot see God in all, You cannot see God at all. Yogi Bhajan Messenger with Voice. PC-to-Phone calls for ridiculously low rates. Guest guest
GB and Donna can have that spice. I'm with you, I can't get past the smell to cook with it. Guest guest
I love it. I started to use it often when I became a veg. I don't think it smells bad. [i thought it was also any vegetable grown in the earth, like potatoes and beets, but I am not sure] I have a cookbook published by a Hindu group around here, somewhere, that has no garlic and onions in it. They use other herbs for s similar flavor, like asafoetida. Kathleen Eureka CA Just to add a little to that discussion... Though I would not wish to eliminate onions and garlic as they are a key part of most of my dishes, I've heard of another reason that some people choose to do so. Some believe that onions and garlic prevent the brain from achieving alpha state (deep meditative state) and have gone so far as to calling onions and garlic " brain poison " . Though that has not proven the case for me, I respect other people's beliefs and choices and just thought I'd mention this.
