Guest guest
Hi All, My name is Tim (SWM, 38, college grad, living near Charlotte, NC) and I am a new member of this group. I just wanted to give a short introduction. Hopefully this will answer all the questions from the questionnaire: I am a diabetic (type 2) and have had weight issues and high blood pressure in the past. I am proud to say that I have lost 90 pounds in the last year and have been able to get my blood pressure under control (both the diabetes and high blood pressure are now controlled without medication - a testament to what weight loss, eating right and exercise can accomplish). I am in the process of going vegetarian (I do currently eat dairy products and fish, but not eggs or meat) and am looking for advice, recipes and support in this process. My favorite veggie foods for warm weather are salads and fruits. For cold weather, I enjoy hearty soups (black bean is my favorite) and veggie chillies. I love spicy foods. :-) Looking forward to being a member of this group, Tim Gamble
Guest guest
Hi Tim - good to hear from you! Congratulations on your weight loss and health gain ;=) - always comforting - and I think your moving towards a vegetarian diet has something to do with it. Keep up the good work - and just watch out for the animal fats (kinda hard on the waistline as well as the cholesterol) in some of our recipes. There are usually, however, vegan recipes available (so marked in theFiles as 'vegan') which will solve some of your problems. As vegetarians we don't eat f*sh ;=) as you know, but if you're worried about your omega 3s you can get that in other ways - walnuts, for eg. While this is not a health list (that's another one), we do try to stay healthy as vegetarians! We have lots of good mexican-style recipes here, and if you like curries, there are a good number of those from around Asia. Ask for anything you need - there's always someone around to advise or chip in with ideas or offer a link at the very least. I've been vegetarian since 1982 and of that vegan for 9 years but am now back to veg. (DH isn't vegetarian but he understands my reasons for keeping a vegetarian house and respects them.) I went veg for ethical reasons, which keeps one on track, but it doesn't omit the less-than-healthy vegetarian foods. I am looking to lose 25 pounds for my health. This is a great group, I've found, for those of us who like to add spice to our foods, both hot and otherwise. I've learned so much. People are helpful here -- questions posted are answered with a surprising variety of responses. If you have a good, easy black bean soup recipe to post, I know we'd all enjoy reading it. Guest guest
> Tim, try the " Morningtar Farms " line of veggie patties. Just a little note to the wise: check to see, if this matters to you, whether or not the product is vegan (not all of this brand are, for eg.) and/or organic - these not, although Amy's (often recommended by strict vegetarians) are both. Guest guest
Good for you Tim I hear what you say about the health aspects. I come from a different background, a life long runner (11 marathons under my belt) I cycle to work, do yoga and life weights. Yet I have to say the switch back to vegetarian leaves me feeling more energetic then I was last year. I would be interested in another poll, as to why we all became vegetarian. Ethics? Health? Environmental concerns? Religious convictions? Welcome to this great group Tim Best regards Kirk

What I've tried so far has been very good. I've tried the Morningstar breakfast links, which I like, and will be trying the veggie patties this weekend.
