Getting [spicey] vegetarian foods in restaurants and Deli's

You would love our local Coop Delicatessen. They label things that are vegan.

And some of the things, that aren't labelled they will always find out for

you--they have an ingredient listing for most of their dishes. They have vegan,

lacto ovo, and meat dishes.

I appreciate that their soups that have tofu in them never contain chicken

broth. I never have to worry about any rice dishes that do not contain meat

having meat broth.

I eat out quite often both for travel, work, and on " dates " with my husband .

Restaurants can be very dicey. Indian restaurants run by those of Sikk [?sp?]

or Hindu background are better because they understand the vegetarian issues

even when they eat and serve meat themselves. Thai restaurants tend to use fish

sauce in their dishes. Most Chinese restaurants use chicken broth in their

soups. I have found one local Chinese restaurant that has a great hot and sour

soup with tofu in it that does not contain chicken broth. HOwever it is in

Arcata CA, a college town, and the community is very sensitive to those issues.

Often you must talk to the chef. The servers tend to be pretty clueless, but

usually well-intentioned. I end up eating a lot of steamed vegetables, green

salads, and bread. I get very sick on the hidden meat broth in

recipes--vegetarian since 1976. I believe it is the protein that makes you so

sick.

I stay out of restaurants for the most part except those that advertise as

having vegan foods since I find that many don't think a thing about adding an

ingredient that is not vegan because they don't realize it. How do I ascertain

with certainty?

Thank you for the information. That is very helpful to be able to distinguish

where I might have a better chance of getting foods that I want. I will have to

stick this in my files so that I can reread it to refresh my memory when wanting

to go out. We have a number of Indian restaurants and will have to look into

their background. I know at some of the Chinese restaurants there English is a

bit broken and I am never sure if they understood what I was asking or

not...they always say " no, no chicken " and when I ask about what they cooked it

is they again repeat the same mantra. LOL linda
