Guest guest
Cookbook Review: Jump Up and Kiss Me (Spicy Vegetarian Cooking) by Jennifer Trainer Thompson This is the only spicy vegetarian-specific cookbook that I've found in my cookbook hunts. It's a very informative book, with reference pages or partial pages on all kinds of things, such as olives, peppers (of course), olive oils, pasta, dried beans, peppercons, and many, many other foods. I often pick up this book looking for a recipe or idea, and get lost reading these reference pages! Contents are as follows: Appetizers Salsas Soups Stews Pasta, Polenta, and Pizza Tortilla, Rice, and Bean Dishes Baked & Grilled Entrees Sandwiches Vegetable Salads Bean & Grain Salads Fruit & Vegetable Salads Breads Dessets Drinks Sauces, Chutneys & Relishes Seasonings, Butters, & Spreads Vinegars & Oils Some of the recipes that are found in this book include: Sundried Tomato Relish with Cayenne Toasts; Roasted Shitake and Walnut Pate; Sweet Potato Fritters with Jerk Sauce; Artichokes with Rosemary-Curry Vinaigrette; Toasted Corn Salsa, Portuguese Vegetable Stew; Shitake Stew with Crisp Polenta; Buckwheat Pasta with Peanut-Coconut Sauce; Rice Noodles with Vegetables, Tofu, and Watercress; Pasta Gratin with Mustard Greens; Focaccia Pizza with Pears, Walnuts, and Gorgonzola; Chutney, Red Pepper, and Grilled Cheddar Sandwich; Hot 'n' Dirty Rice Salad; Jalapeno-Onion Corn Sticks; and Rosemary-Serrano Red Wine Vinegar. This book presents recipes for many genres - italian, mexican, indian, jamaican, and so on. Even Emiril makes an appearance in " Emeril's Grilled Piri Piri Vegetables. " I would say that the only drawback is that it's printed on a newsprint-like paper, and there are no pictures. Otherwise, it's a fantastic reference, and it's filled with inspiring recipes! Guest guest
Catherine, you beat me to it! I've loaned my Jump up... to a friend and could remember neither the author nor the publisher. I picked it up in the Denver airport on a layover during a concert tour a few years ago and absolutely love the recipes in it. Everything that I've made so far has been fantastic. I agree with you however about the lack of pictures, but that's the only flaw as far as I'm concerned. Guest guest
Right on, Cathrine! Way to go :=) This looks like a must-have cookbook for me! Thanks so much for the review - we'll have to add it to our Books folder in the Files! Best love, Pat
Guest guest
Catherine-girl, how have you been? This was a wonderful book review... i am a sucker for new cookbooks, and the recipes you described sound wonderful. i do have a question though. Would you say that the recipes are mostly vegan, or predominantly lacto-ovo veg, or just a goodly mix of both? ~ Craig, you can answer this too. *s*~ ~ pt ~ It is Christmas in the heart that puts Christmas in the air. ~ W.T. Guest guest
Thanks, pt... much appreciated! That's the first review I've ever written, so I appreciate the positive feedback! Looking through the book, there are definately some non-vegan recipes, such as Tanzanian Potato Fritters with Tamarinnd Sauce (8 eggs and some milk), Corn and Zucchini Fritters (eggs & milk), some of the bruschettas use cheese as a topping, but I can't see why you couldn't substitute soy cheese or use none at all. The salsas are all vegan, as are all but one of the soups. A few recipes call for butter, but you could easily substitute oil or margerine. The recipes that wouldn't be easily converted by using soy cheese or margerine instead of butter make up at most a sixth of the book, probably less. ....and I've been good, you? Guest guest
If I remember correctly, the vast majority of the recipes are either vegan, or can be made vegan with a few substitutions or omissions. I don't have the book in front of me so can't say for sure.
