Guest guest
Cookbook Review: Moosewood Restaurant - Simple Suppers Ok, I'll admit it. I'm a Moosewood freak. I own every single Moosewood Cookbook out there. Even Moosewood Cooks for a Crowd (when am I going to use it? Who knows...) I just love their innovative, yet practical recipes. I've been disappointed only by one recipe (but that's another story.) This new cookbook is glossier than any of their others. Released in November, it's a perfect Christmas gift. The only bummer factor is that Moosewood started to introduce fish recipes into their cookbooks quite a few cookbooks ago, which just seemed wrong to me. Nevertheless, the new Simple Suppers continues to provide many excellent recipes, and aside from that, has fantastic pictures, as well. I actually read the whole thing cover to cover, because I found it so intriguing. Chapters are: Pasta Sautes, Curries and More Beans & Tofu Egg Dishes Main Dish Grains Main Dish Salads Soups Sandwiches, Wraps & Rolls Fish (Blech) Side Grains Side Dishes Side Salads Dressings, Condiments & Seasonings Sauces & Spreads Desserts The Well-Stocked Pantry Guide to Ingredients, Tools & Techniques Some of the recipes you'll find are: Creamy Lemon Pasta, Pasta with Olives Piquant, Fettuccine with Fresh Herbs, Pasta with Artichoke Hearts & Feta, Beijing Noodles, Jop Chai, Hot & Sour Stirfry, Navajo Stew, Baked Stuffed Tomatoes, Roasted Ratatouille, Roasted Vegetable Curry, Sesame Tofu with Spinach, Shortcut Chili, Nachos Grandes, Greek Frittata, Poached Huevos Rancheros, Chipotle Scrambled Eggs, Egg Foo Yung Omelet, Pineapple Fried Rice with Tofu, Spinach Polenta Topped with Tomatoes, Mexican Polenta Stuffed Peppers, Quinoa & Vegetable Pilaf, Caesar Salad with Tofu Croutons, Vietnamese Noodle Salad, Tomato Tortilla Soup, Thai Buternut Squash Soup, Bean & Cheese Quesadillas, Vegetarian Rueban, Easy Egg Rolls, Greek Antipasto Pita, Brilliant Yellow Noodles, Sesame Broccoli, Corn & Pepper Salad, Beet Salad, Greek Salad, Pan-Asian Slaw, Chipotle Potato Salad, Pineapple Chutney, Roasted Garlic, Chili Powder, Moroccan Spice Mix, Sicilian Chickpea Spread, Spicy Peanut Sauce, Sweet Spiced Nuts, Caribbean Sauteed Bananas, Peach Brown Betty, and Butterscotch Icebox Cookies. It's a very diverse book, with over 175 relatively simple, weeknight friendly dishes. Cathrine
Guest guest
Hi Catherine, I recently bought that book at Costco, and it looks pretty good. My only problem with it so far is that it does not give nutritional information for the recipes. Moosewood's " Moosewood Cooks at Home, " which I recently bought used, gives all of that information. Of the two cookbooks, I prefer " Moosewood Cooks at Home " so far, but I haven't really given " Simple Suppers " a chance yet. Have you cooked anything from it yet? Like you, I'm a complete Moosewood junkie and love all of their books, though Mollie Katzen's " Moosewood Cookbook " and " Enchanted Broccoli Forest " are still my favorites and the ones I cook from most frequently. Guest guest
Sherry, I think we're kindered spirits! I also love the Moosewood Cookbook and Enchanted Broccoli Forest the best. I love those, and they show the stains and spills of my love. Other than those two, my next favourite is the Daily Special, which does contain nutritional info, and looks very similar to Cooks at Home. I hadn't realized that the Simple Suppers didn't have nutritionals included, good point. And I've not yet to cook from it, either. Busy season, and I've been making the old standby's... and alot of stir fries of my own creation.
