cost of vegan versus non-vegetarian diet

Somewhere I read eating as a vegan (or was it vegetarian) may cost a little more

than maintaining the regular American diet. I can't see why that would be. I'd

think vegan would cost less! Anyone have an opinion from your experience?

I definitely spend a lot more now that I watch my diet. Produce costs

a ton! And then there's the beans, nuts, spices, etc., etc.. Compare

that to the S.A.D., with it's $0.99 mac and cheese boxes, canned

veggies, and so on, and you can see why vegan (or any healthier

lifestyle) is more expensive than the S.A.D..

Wendy, I find I spend a little more being vegan, trying to get a lot of

variety and get mostly organic vegetables.

I think if you cook a lot of dried beans and rice you could save a lot

of money.

The SAD, standard American diet, has a lot of relatively cheap starch

and fat. Meat and dairy are partially subsidized by the government,

otherwise it would not be affordable for the masses.

I would absolutely agree - vegetarian me*t substitutes cost quite a bit

more than the real stuff, and that's just a start. Erin made some

excellent points in her message, and that's the really sad truth. Too

bad, huh? We're incentified by cheap priced to eat a poor diet! Soy

milk costs more than cow's milk, organic more than pesticide/herbicide

laden food... I wonder how many years it will take for that to change.

Dear Wendy,

Certainly i would agree on your opinion,i could still remember those

years that my four kids are not yet a vegan(total vegetarian)i really suffered a

lot budgeting and still we have to minimize our expensies just to be able to

maintain our food budget. To my surprise after a year of leaving them when i

worked in Saudi,my children are all vegan and we really saved a lot for the food

budget and were able to provide for others needs, and also, the medical expensies

were really cut off and i cant really explain how it all began.I was not

listening to them till i had the mild stroke and all they did is to force me

follow their lifestyle and thats how my being vagan started and just relating

the benifits we derrived out of being a vagan

Sad to know that. Here in the Philippines we have to resolve on the seasonal

organic vegetables that are really cheaper, except of course from other sources

to enable us get complete food nutrients, but still the cost of medicine is

greatly minimized from the time we turned as vagan as we seldom get sick

my daughter is 8. She is not a vegetarian as I am, but since I greatly reduced

her meat intake over the past year she has not gotten all those colds she used

to get.

Blessings,

Chanda
