Guest guest
Leah, When I was interviewing doctors for my son, I asked all the pertinent questions and the main one was, of course, "I am a vegetarian and will raise my children that way, how do you feel about that?" I pretty much judged by the doctors answer if they were going to be helpful and not prejudicial. I am happy with the doc we have chosen for our children. Just be open and honest with your doc and make sure that you do the research regarding proper nutrition for veggie newborns and children. Good luck! We have decided to raise our child as a vegan.Luckily, I have spent the last 8 years educating my friends and familyabout the nutritional value of my dietary choice, so at this point weare able to discuss any concerns and opinions openly. Where I still runinto problems is at the Doctor's office. I was wondering if anyone hassuggestions on how to find a supportive pediatrician? As an adult, thebest defense to show up healthy, but I know even if the baby is healthyand thriving, the doctor may be concerned about long terms effects ofvegetarianism if he/she is not familiar with the facts and research thatis out there. I live in Minnesota, and if anyone is from here, a namewould be great. Guest guest
Unfortunately for you, I do not live in Minnesota. I was able to find a wonderful pediatrician office through a friend who's 3 year daughter is a vegetarian. They did not bat an eye when I said I wanted to raise my daughter vegetarian...but they also did not give me any direction either. If you do not know any other vegetarians, maybe a midwife in your area know's some forward thinking doctors??? While pregnant, my midwife was always very accepting of my eating choices, I am not sure my OB would have been that accepting. The big problem I had was deciding how much protein a day I needed. I was told by various midwives and books between 60 and 100 grams (I think grams) a day. That is a big range. When I tried eating the 100 grams, I thought I was going to explode...my weight sure did. :-) Anyway, back to your question, I would recommend interviewing some doctors before choosing one anyway. That can be a interview question. Somewhere in my pregancy file, I have interview questions. Let me know if you would like a copy. They may also be in books, like What to Expect When You are Expecting. Congratulations on your pregancy. ----Original Message Follows---- Leah Pesola <leah Hello! Guest guest
Hi Leah! I was just at http://www.vegfamily.com they are are geared toward the vegan family and have interesting sites. Also, they have a site where veg*n parents look for other ve*gn parents and I have seen one or two people from Minnesota there. I am not sure if they have the site about ve*gn doctors finished or are in the process of working on it. Go, and take a look, they are super nice people. Where in Minnesota are you? I am currently in Germany, but my hubby is from Minnesota and he is already there waiting for us in Minneapolis. Guest guest
Leah, Concerning pediatricians, we are currently on our fourth since our daughter was born (she's 4), only because of insurance issues. I tell the doctor up front that we are vegan, and more often than not, they just have not learned about vegetarianism, or nutrition, for that matter and really appreciate information. I copied some basic vegan nutritional info from Dr. Klaper's " Pregnancy, children, and the vegan diet " book and brought it to the office. Also, the VRG has wonderful brochures that deal specifically with the health care provider. The best part is you will hardly ever have to go a pediatrician when your child is a veg*n!! Guest guest
If he or she first asks " where do you get your protein? " that's an automatic veto! I do have a little more respect for those who ask, " where do you get your calcium? " ... but not much... > > Leah Pesola [leah] > Wednesday, August 23, 2000 3:56 PM > > Hello! > > > Hello! > > My name is Leah, and I have just d to this list. Unfortunately, I don't know if any will have leads in Minnesota. However, doctors have colleagues all over; so, you might end up calling one that you find and asking for a contact near you. Guest guest
Oh my god, I do the same thing! I judge their nutritional knowledge by what their first question is after I tell them I am vegan. Where I get my protien is the lowest scoreing, followed by cacium, then B12 and then other nutrients. Sometimes though, I feel they are asking because they want to make sure I know what I am doing, not just because they are clueless. My regular Dr. did ask the protien question but, she has still been great about it. I just explained everything to her, and she is a very good Dr. My OBGYN didn't even seem slightly phased, she just said " oh, well that's good " . My son's Dr. is very good as well. He is very reassureing even when I am concerned about his eatting habbits. My son is so very picky with food. The Dr. my son had for the first 3 months though, was a horrible horrible woman. If I had thought about it at the time I would have filed a grievance against her. It was not because we were (at the time)vegetarians. I think it had more to do with her just being an angry person and us being young and looking a bit unusual. She was very mean towards us. Summer -- In , " Karen L.
