(Herbs, by contrast, are defined as leaves from plants without woody stems.) " The other day I ate at a local Trinidadian restaurant. They make roti, which are like giant burritos, with a spongy bread reminiscent of the bread in Ethiopian cuisine. (Mine was filled with curried potatoes, spinach, and channa - a spicy chick pea stew.) I tried their homemade bark drink. It tasted like a slightly spicy root beer to me. I asked what kind of tree bark they used and they said they could use any kind of tree. I would not ordinarily think of this as spicy, but is was aromatic. I think we are talking about recipes with a bit of a kick here, not just mildly spicy, right? from Maida Citizens for Pets in Condos, http://www.petsincondos.org South Florida Vegetarian Events, http://www.soflavegevents.net

" Yup. so I did :-) See below. >I think we are talking about recipes with a bit of a kick > here, not just mildly spicy, right? Welllll, the original intent of the list remains the intent of the list: Hot and Spicy - that's more than a bit of a kick LOL And, as we've always said, it's not for the faint hearted. However, the suggestion for spring is that for baked goods (eg. breads, muffins, etc.) and desserts (cakes, puddings, etc.) we might encourage recipes that don't necessarily have 'heat' from spices, but still use spices (spices, not herbs, that is). That means my delightful oregano quickbread would NOT be meant in this category, because oregano is an herb, not a spice. My pumpkin muffins, however, DO contain spices :-) I have, however, made another addition to the webpage (it's getting to be a novel!) to clarify. The change is in the paragraph starting 'NOTE " , but I think it should be read in context. " Vegetarian Spice is for vegans, vegetarians, those making the transition to vegetarianism and other vegetarian-friendly people who like their food 'HOT' AND SPICY - not for the faint-hearted! " Here you will find curries, stir-fried dishes, casseroles, soups, salads, etc., from Asia, Africa, Europe, the Middle East, the Americas, Caribbean, etc. But that's not all . . . " Something New For Spring - spice-laden (but not necessarily `hot') BAKED GOODS and DESSERTS - the perfect snack, accompaniment or closing to any meal! " NOTE: For the purpose of this group, we define `SPICES' as aromatic or pungent seasonings from the seeds, roots, fruits, buds, stems or bark of plants and trees. (Herbs, by contrast, are quite different, defined as leaves from plants without woody stems.) By *'HOT' AND SPICY* we mean the addition of such spices as chillies, cloves, ginger, etc., to produce spicy 'heat'. " But hey, I wonder if they even *knew* what kind of bark was in that drink, Maida! Best love, Pat

I think they knew and just weren't saying. They are probably collecting bark from all the trees down here that were downed by the Hurricane Wilma. I will just assume that they brew it a long time and strain out any impurities and that what is left is healthful. from Maida Citizens for Pets in Condos, http://www.petsincondos.org South Florida Vegetarian Events, http://www.soflavegevents.net
