Guest guest
Pat, I would agree, but my question was if anyone had jam or jelly recipes. I didn't expect that they'd be filed in the recipe section if they weren't suitable. However, I'm now thinking that any ingredient in a recipe that might conceivably be not vegetarian cannot be posted to this list, such as ketchup, jams, jellies, cheeses, tomato sauce, yeast and yogurt products, etc. All could conceivably have animal products in them depending on the brand and ingredients. Citric acid and lactic acid, among other things, are in many foods these days. Are we to assume that we may not list an ingredient that has one of these in it unless we have verified that it always comes from vegetarian sources or specify which brand to buy? If so, there needs to be a lot of weeding and specifying of ingredients in the recipes on file because a lot of the recipe ingredients listed in the file could contain nonvegetarian additives. I guess I'm a little confused, Pat. All I asked for was a recipe for jelly or jam. Remember, this was the complete post I made that started this: Hot Pepper Jelly: " Anybody made it? I found one on the Sure-Jell site, but I'd love to have one that one of you has tried. " I was not threatening to publish the Sure-Jell recipe to the list or demand that Maida put it in the files. Next thing I know, Maida is freaking out that someone might expect her to put a Sure-Jell recipe in the files, and people are confusing jello with jelly. The bottom line is that no one has posted a recipe for spicy jelly or jam. Perhaps nobody knows one, or perhaps we've been intimidated and don't want to post anything that might conceivably not be vegetarian because we haven't contacted the company in question. Perhaps the solution is to require posted recipes to specify which cheese, ketchup, tomato sauce, etc. to use after checking them out and to not post anything that hasn't been thoroughly researched. Or perhaps people can be allowed to post recipes that they think good faith are vegetarian and that the person in charge of filing these recipes quietly not file the ones that are suspect, possibly contacting the poster privately if a recipe won't be posted, giving the reason why, or asking for further clarification. I suggest the latter policy, as it is far less intimidating. Sherry At 03:29 PM 3/23/2006, you wrote: > > Pat, I've not yet run across a recipe for making a jam or jelly with > > agar.
