Guest guest
OK, Mary Callan Lovely to meet you and greetings and salutations right back <waving waving waving> Now look, this is really great that your partner is wanting you to make the change to vegetarianism and that you want to do it too! It's sooooo difficult when people in a household don't agree on a lifestyle (I'm not saying impossible, but it does make for more work and sometimes a little teeny bit of tension - am I right, you other guys out there?). Good luck with all that - we're behind you both all the way!!!!! I'm lucky, because my dh is right with me on this lifestyle, which is a good thing after a quarter of a century eating this way. Yup. I hate to think of one of us changing our minds :=( Tea? Nah, lemon in tea for me, if anything, but I've always been weird! > My partner was a vegetarian > before for several years, I don't know why she dropped out of the > practice, but she's whole heartedly dropping us both back in now. I'm > swimming with the tide and looking for new ways to spice up my food with > good taste Oh then big hugs to your partner! Sometimes one does drop out for a while. It just happens for a whole bunch of reasons, but it's good that she's dragging you along with her back into it <big cheeky grin> - and not kicking and screaming, either. Yup, you could both use some new ideas for cooking. OK - can do. Just ask what you want to know!!! We've lots of people here who just love to talk about food! (OK guys - where ARE you all when we need ya????) > Am I still here or kicked off the list now? Not yet. You have to try harder than that. Best love, Pat (Owner/host of this strange group!) Guest guest
WAVING again - yay, I say! Now I have been badgering my partner with ALL sorts of stupid questions, trust me, I'm learning as I swim with the tide. I even - patting myself on the back - did a very close vegetarian dish tonight without any help. Okay, so I used some beef buillon powder instead of adding salt (I also have to watch the salt intake, high blood pressure problems) but other than that, I was quite pleased with the results. I started with boiling water, chopped onions and celery - I love celery in dishes - it makes me feel creative for some strange reason... Anyway, I let it cook down and added large jumbo elbow macaroni and black-eyed peas. I was working with what we had in the cupboard - slim pickings because we've not grocery shopped for the week yet. I used a spice blend called one step marinade or something like that - garlic and herb - yummy! Once the pasta was al dente I thickened up the liquid with some instant potato flakes. I should have added mushrooms and diced tomatoes - would have made it more interesting - as my partner pointed out, but it was very good she said. (Beaming with a little pride here!) What sort of spices should I be looking for that will make a throw-together dish like this more interesting. The only thing I noticed is that my partner used a lot of salt and pepper - which she always does when I *bland* out the food with the instant potato flakes. She can always tell when I use them no matter what spices I might include. Is there some staple list of spices I should be including in my pantry? I have no idea what cumin does to a dish - I'm a newbie, just keep that in mind. Coriander - I'm clueless. We have a coffee grinder set aside just for grinding spices - I'm ready to mix some concoctions and potions - who's going to help me out here? One thing we don't particularly like is cloves. Neither of us is crazy about it as a cooking spice - a candle fragrance is all right though - nice to smell, but we don't want to eat it. Okay, I've rambled on enough for the time being. Back onto the sidelines. Guest guest
Try to stay away from white foods: pasta (use whole wheat or brown rice), rice (use brown or wild), flour (use whole wheat, or a combination of whole wheat and white). There are many wonderful spice and herb blends. I really hate to cook, and buy blends and cooking sauces to make my life simpler. Mary Callan <marybakes wrote: WAVING again - yay, I say!
