About the T.V. thing-- there are a lot of bad things

on TV which should be monitored when children are

watching, and too much TV is definitely bad for

anyone, but some carefully chosen TV is not going to

kill anyone or fry thier brain! All of you on this

list, look at what wonderful people you are today, and

I bet you watched TV as a kid. I try to remember this

and not beat myself up about my kids watching one hour

of TV a day.

Hi guys,

Veggie Val here. I thought I could shed more light on the details about

McDonald's french fries in the U.S., where they are not vegetarian. However,

they are no longer fried in lard.

I have just finished reading " Fast Food Nation " by Eric Schlosser (a book I

highly recommend). According to his extensive research on McDonald's, McDonald's

french fries in the U.S. have been cooked in " all vegetable oil " since the 1990s

(before that they were cooked in all-beef tallow). This was a direct result of a

barrage of criticism over the amount of cholesterol in their fries. However,

McDonald's french-fry suppliers in the U.S. still add " a miniscule amount of

beef flavoring as an ingredient in the raw product. "

When this flavoring was revealed in his book in 2001, a crowd of 500 Hindu

ransacked a McDonald's outside Bombay. However, the dispute revealed that

McDonald's was quietly using different ingredients in different countries.

Further research, including chemical analysis by Bombay health authorities,

confirmed that McDonald's fries in India had never used animal products. Nor was

beef added to the fries at McDonald's in Great Britain (a country with a sizable

Hindu population).

The corporation issed an apology in the U.S., in which they " apologized for

causing any confusion with its Hindu and vegetarian customers, " But McDonald's

was clearly misleading U.S. customers by saying that it had switched to 100%

vegetable oil. That much was true...but they neglected to mention their

suppliers in the U.S. still used beef-derived flavoring.

Schlosser further notes that McDonald's still makes fries the " macho,

old-fashioned way in Canada (!), Japan, Mexico, and Australia, cooking them in

beef tallow. "

One further thing Schlosser notes is that franchise managers are not the best

sources about the true nature of the fries. A letter from a McDonald's manager

in Florida in reply to a vegetarian inquiry listed french fries as one of their

vegetarian options. Not true in the U.S.! But you might consider yourself safe

in Great Britain and India, where the fries are vegetarian.

Signed,

Veggie Val
