Guest guest
OK, I THINK it's spelled konnyaku, although that's not what it said on the menu on Saturday. I selected a nice veggie dish of sauteed konnyaku with vegetables (I remember baby corn, bamboo shoot, carrot, celery or something green (I forget) - and goodness knows what else.). I'd never had this before, so I figured 'Nothing ventured . . .. ' and it was delicious! OK, new food found, and I was told it was made out of 'yam powder', which seems to accord with what I found on a web search - a relative of the sweet potato family. It was cut in fancy shapes, in a finely cut criss-cross pattern, and didn't have a lot of flavour of its own but picked up from the sauce etc. It had a texture quite unlike anything veggie that I've had before - firm yet springy. The net article said I could buy it in blocks, like tofu, but I swear I've never seen it. So okay, has anyone more knowledge of it? Is it typically Japanese, or is it called something else in other cuisines? (Next time we take a hike down to our favourite Asian grocer I'm going to be asking for it. Fingers crossed!) Thanks in advance. Love, Pat
