Hi Maureen,

I live in South Florida and several times a year a local organization, The Rare

Fruit Council, has a plant sale. It's quite a large sale with lots of

interesting plants. One of the members was selling Stevia so I bought a plant.

It looks somewhat weedy with small white flowers. She had a big box of shoots

that looked as if she just pulled up big handfuls of the plant from an exiting

bed and just potted up the stems.. I think that Stevia grows quite fast and is

very hardy. I tasted a piece and it was SWEET but tasted like a raw leaf. The

seller suggested making herbal tea but there must be more ways to use this plant

than just making tea.

I also bought, at this sale, a Banana plant, a Plantain plant, an Akee tree,

and a plant the seller said was " paprika " but not the paprika pepper that one

would use as a spice. I really think that it is something like an Annato.

Anyway, the seeds were brought in from Paraguay and they're are used to color

yellow rice.

Stevia may taste like sugar but does that mean it tastes good? Sugar tastes

awful to me and so does stevia.

And stevia also has a slight metallic edge that's not pleasant either.

Hi Doug,

I have had stevia in the past, and have found it to have an after-taste. I would

use it but have not found one that tastes natural. What kind do you use?

I tated stevia for the first time about 8 years ago, when I was managing a

natural food store. Too me, it tasted " fake " , kinda like saccarhin.

I tried it again just recently in some herbal tea which contained it, and tasted

the same way again. May be it's bad for my system ot my body just doesn't like

it.

Actually, I wrote agave " syrup " , but it's actually agave nectar, from the fruit

of the desert plant/cactus. It's extremely sweet like honey, but with a very

low glycemic index. One tablespoon has only 5 sugar carbs in it.

I read something very negative about its ineraction with our nervous systems

years ago, long before I ever tasted it, but I haven't seen anything negative

since, and I feel fine using a little of it now and again.

Thank for the info. But where do you get the plants, and what do I do with the

leaves to get that natural taste? If it tastes that good, I would always use it!

Kristi;

You just pull a leaf off and eat it. Prepare for a party in your

mouth. Read message #1171 on Stevia. I don't know where to get them,

I live in Hawaii and got plants from friends. Stevia.com did sell

them at one time but I don't know if they still do.

I am against editing our messages, most of the time I don't know what

a message is talking about and I can just look down and see what

message is being answered, then it makes sense.

I am on my 10th day of a water/juice fast, and doing great. I had a

small amount of juice to get me through some rough spots at work. I

don't know how long I will fast, but I am certainly not where I want

to be yet, it may be a long one.

I have used stevia, but find it very powerful (I have both the liquid and the

dry powder packets). It only takes a small amount to sweeten drinks (less than

a half packet for a cup of tea and only a drop or two of the liquid). It is not

my sweetener of choice, but it is a healthier one.

I will pass this info to a coworker. He was just diagnosed with

diabetes and he's having a hard time. He bought some stevia packets

and can't stand how sweet it makes his tea. I will tell him to try 1/2

packet. I didn't know what the problem was since I use sugar and had

no idea if it was a different taste, etc. He doesn't like Sweet N'Low

he doesn't like the after taste.

THanks,

I need any tips, advice, comments, etc., you can give regarding using stevia for

cooking.

So far I only use it for sweetening hot drinks and for adding to cooked cereal.

Help, please.

Here is a link to recipes: http://www.stevia.com/SteviaRecipes.asp?RCId=1

I alway use about 2/3 of what is called for; if you use too much it becomes

bitter.

Thanks!!!! They name more varieties of stevia than we have here (just the

extract liquid,

the extract in powder form and in powder sachets), but I guess I catch the drift

:)

Oh OKAYYYY! Now that's something I had half heard before, before I discovered

stevia,

that there was a problem cooking with it, and that's it. OK, Can use a little

less than called

for - we don't go in for a lot of sweetness anyway :)

While stevia *is* a more or less " natural " product, from an herb, it

is not raw, unless you are growing your own plants.

So, that's something you will have to make your own decisions about.

Some people use honey. Although honey is not vegan (somebody robbed

those poor little bees), but you *can* get raw honey. Again, that

will be something you have to make your own decisions about.

Many people, especially those who write all those lovely cookbooks

with luscious gourmet recipes, and those who cook for raw food

restaurants, use agave nectar when sweetening is called for.

Many other people use dates or raisins to add sweetness to their

recipes. Dates and raisins are food, so you don't have to agonize

about what you are eating and what it is doing to you. You might want

to think about food combinations, if you are so inclined. Regardless,

dates and/or raisins taste good, and have enormous sweetening power.

Some people just use such fruit juices as apple, orange, and grape to

sweeten their recipes.

Hope this helps some.

Margaret

A lot of raw honey isn't really raw, either.
