Guest guest
Hi everyone, I joined the group today on my neverending quest for tasty vegan recipes. I live in Madison, Wisconsin, USA. My 1 1/2 year old daughter was diagnosed with a dairy allergy last September. Because of her, I gave up all dairy products, which let me tell you, being raised on cheese in the " cheese " state was quite a switch! Then, a couple of months ago I realized that if I was able to give dairy, I could easily give up " all the rest of it. " So far, so good! I'm on my 37th day of vegan eating and I LOVE IT! I do not miss the meat. Sometimes I miss salmon but then I make a fantastic vegan dinner and feel so good! In the last six weeks I have not had ANY heartburn, and let's just say the GI troubles I experienced in the past are gone. I don't miss the mucous-y feeling I always had after drinking cow's milk. Come to think of it, I'm not sneezing my head off like I used to, either. Coincidence??! Last night I made the Tempeh Reuben out of Vegan with a Vengance and was in absolute veg-heaven. And no guilt!!! I'm looking forward to exploring what this group has to offer. Thanks for letting me be a part! Guest guest
Hey there & welcome! How's Madtown? Amazing how much easier it is to 'give up stuff' when our kids' health is the issue, huh? Good for you & good luck! Beth Debra Morse <dandebmorse wrote: Hi everyone, I joined the group today on my neverending quest for tasty vegan recipes. I live in Madison, Wisconsin, USA. Guest guest
Hi Beth, When my daughter was first diagnosed with her allergy, I thought it was a real drag. I couldn't rely on the usual " kid foods " : no mac 'n cheese, chicken mcnuggets, tubes of yogurt, etc. We didn't usually eat that stuff but it was a bit daunting going into her toddlerhood without those crutches at our side. But, once I started revising our diet so that we could accommodate her needs, I realized that we were NOT starving and we were eating so much better! She doesn't pester us for M & M's and crap-food because she does not know what it is. She eats a wide variety of foods, and I love getting comments from other moms who say " I don't know how you do with out _______ " -- fill in the blank (TV dinners, pizza delivery, etc.). For Lent, my husband gave up unhealthy snacks. I gave up cookies, ice cream and candy. But then I upped the ante (totally unrelated to Lent, it's just a coincidence) and decided to try the vegan way. I last ate meat on Feb 26th. I couldn't even tell you what it was. I don't miss it. I feel great! I'm not quite ready to learn about all the animal rights stuff, but I do have a clearer conscience about the food I am eating. Funny how I never acknowledged the connection between that big juicy steak and the cow it came from. Ugh, I just don't want to go there. But I DO want to learn all I can about tasty vegan cooking. My husband is eating more healthily because of how I cook at home. If he wants to eat a cheeseburger when we go out or when he is out to lunch during the workday, good for him. If he wants to cook dinner at home and it contains meat, fine. But I'm not eating it and he's totally cool with that. Oh, and in response to your question, Madtown is the same as always. Bonkers on the Isthmus and snooty in the suburbs, but don't forget the laid-back vibe. I actually live in one of the suburbs (Fitchburg), but I'll always be from the Isthums in my heart! Thanks, Debra ---- Beth Renzetti <elmothree2000 wrote: > Hey there & welcome! How's Madtown? Amazing how much easier it is to 'give up stuff' when our kids' health is the issue, huh? No problem - I think many moms on this group would be interested to hear about how you coped with your daughter's allergies Dairy-free eating isn't all that difficult - and for some it is a lifesaver! I think you've done splendidly with all that. Others may have some ideas too. And congratulations on being a new vegetarian. Don't worry, we don't discuss animal rights matters on this group. That's not because many of us don't agree with them - so very many of us do - but because that's just not the kind of group this is. We are more food oriented I know what you mean about the poor cow, though, and totally sympathize. I'm going to take this chance of welcoming you to Vegetarian Spice. We do hope you enjoy the group. Things are pretty quiet right now, but that's a matter for the members to change, eh? Please feel free to post about vegetarian eating (including the dairy problem if you like) and of course recipes you might have or be looking for. Btw, I'm Pat, group 'owner', and I'm helped here by moderators Marie and Piers (who have posted recently to tell you about themselves). I live in Southwestern Ontario (Canada) with my dh, two beagles and a cat. I am 66 and retired. I've been a veggie for a long time now, but I am more recently a vegan (for 'ethical' reasons, but appreciating the health benefits too!). We have all kinds of vegetarians here - ovo-lacto, lacto, ovo, vegan and lifestyle vegans - and many who are not vegetarian, or not full-time vegetarian, but are keen to find better ways to add more vegetables to their meals. I look forward to chatting with you. Enjoy! Best, Pat
