Guest guest
Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help me out. Now that the weather is warm my DH is at the bbq almost evey night. Fine for him since he is omni but not so great for the boys and I. Any suggestions on what I can put on the bbq? Besides vege-burgers and vege-dogs? We get kind of bored of this and it doesn't appeal to my DH (I am trying really hard to make the vegetarian food appeal to him so he decreases his meat intake - I'm having terrible luck but that's for another post). I have seen the vegetarian BBQ cookbook online but can't get it at my bookstore. Any suggestions would be so helpful. I have made seitan (gluten) but am not having a lot of success with it. I was hoping to post a jerk seitan recipe I tried but frankly, it didn't taste good...so disappointing. Thanks, Paula
Guest guest
I'm very new and tentative to vegetarian cuisine, but I can tell you the things I love to put on the grill here in the way of veggies - this is probably pretty rudimentary for someone who is an experienced vegetarian...I'm not familiar with good meat substitutes. Buttered and individually foil-wrapped, tops on my list are corn and potatoes, which are starchy and filling for your DH's (I love that...) meat-eater palate... Another good one is carrots, and similar root crops that your family may like. Sweet potatoes are marvelous done this way. Foiled packages of mushrooms, onions and peppers caramelize quickly, and would be luscious on top of that potato. If you don't use dairy, a favorite olive oil would be delicious for any of these - Or...how about a kebab skewer with chunks of the same vegetables, drizzled with a little oil and some fresh herbs before grilling? Guest guest
I haven't tried it yet myself, but isn't marinated firm tofu good on the grill? I would think you could just whip up your favorite old marinade, let it sit for a while, and grill chunks/slabs of it, or thread it onto skewers with veggies. Guest guest
I hear corn on the cob can be done on the grill by leaving it in the husk. I also second the portabello mushroom idea. You could also make your own bean burgers. -Erin www.zenpawn.com/vegblog
Guest guest
Hello Like others that have responded thus far, you can't go wrong with Portobello mushrooms. I enjoy a sandwich with grilled zuchinni and eggplant. I slice the zuchinni and eggplant thin and cover with olive oil and oregano. Put on the grill at medium until it gets soft. Place on a fresh bun of your choice with some dijon mustard and a slice of cheese (if you are so inclined) and you have one fantastic sandwich.
