Hi Kelli,

We don't actually have anything in our " files " section, but all recipes

shared are archived on our web site. You can get there by going to:

http://www. . At the home page

find " messages " and click there. If you want to start at the beginning,

type #1 in the search number box and then scroll through from there. You

can also do a search by ingredient or recipe title using the " subject "

search feature.

Let us know if you need more help.

Hi, all!

I have a question/suggestion, about the files. Or, actually, two. Or

three, now that I think of it (LOL!)

I am well-placed for categorizing dishes, since I've been making

recipe files and folders in my hard drive for years now, and as part

of my job I've edited cookbooks, and I'm writing one at the moment

too.

Anyway, let's come to what I'd like to suggest.

One is the categories. The category main dishes is very confusing to

me. For meat eaters, it means meat or fish. For us vegetarians it can

mean fake meat or pulses, if you go by the reasoning that main dish

must be the one with more protein. But it's not always so clear cut.

Many vegetable casseroles, rice and vegetable dishes can be the focal

point of a menu. So how do you differentiate between main dish and

side dish? One may choose to have bean soup for main dish and a rice

with vegetables for side dish, or the opposite.

My suggestion is to put by main ingredient: Pulses, Grains and rice,

Vegetables, Cheese and eggs. Possibly, there could be one special

folder for crockpot recipes, as these are very different than others

in their preparation.

Then, do not put vegan things separately. First of all because there

might be duplications of near-similar things. Secondly, most recipes

can be made vegan, so why limit the choice? For those recipes that

are vegan to begin with, we could just put a " V " near the title to

let the vegans know.

Then, I am not sure about the idea of putting a separate file for

each and every recipe. For now it works, but when they start being

too many? Remember that each time you click on a file, you have to

open a new window.

For instance, take the Jasmine rice recipes Ladyvelvet has posted, or

the Juice recipes more recently. Why not put them all together? If a

person is interested, they can download the whole file and then, with

quiet and time, offline, can browse through the recipes and delete

the ones they don't like.

If the recipes are in text format, of course, and there are many, it

will be a bit difficult to scroll through. When more than five are

present in the same document, it HAS to be formatted, with headers,

so that you can open Document Map (in MS Word, but I believe most

text editors have some sort of similar feature) and click on any

header to be immediately taken there. I have a document called " Pies "

which has more than a hundred pies in it, I think (I've never

counted!). Without Document Map I'd be lost...

The objection may be that formatted documents take up more space, and

take more time to download. But they surely save work.

One solution that could be adopted would be to make such documents,

with many recipes in them, then the other members who want to upload

individual text files continue to do so, and once in a while some

good-natured soul with time on her hands can take the main document

and add all the text files, then delete them.

What do you all think?

To let you see what I mean, I am uploading my crockpot recipes done

this way. If you find it is not convenient, and they take too much

space, you may delete them, I won't be offended!

Irene, I set the files up, but if you'd like to re-do it, you are

welcome to go for it. :) Unfortunately, does not allow us to

move files around. A file must be destroyed, then re-created

elsewhere. Also, doesn't allow two files by the same name.

It lets you do all the work of setting it up, then when you go to

save it, it flashes a screen telling you that a file already exists

by that name, and your work is GONE. So if you want to copy a file

to a new folder that you've created in re-organizing things, you

have to rename it. I found it useful to put a single letter in the

front of the file name, then when the other file is deleted, take

that letter out, leaving the file name correct.

Another point is that if YOU create a file only YOU can delete it.

So after you've done your work, please write me privately and tell

me exactly what you'd like me to delete, and I'll be happy to

cooperate.

> So how do you differentiate between main dish and

> side dish?

I had that problem myself, but when I started working on it these

two categories were already there. It's also difficult to know

where to put a recipe that's 50% rice and 50% beans, for instance --

in the rice file? Or the beans file? Or, if it contains veggies

does it go into the veggie file? Since you're experienced with

this, I hope you can straighten it out.

> My suggestion is to put by main ingredient: Pulses, Grains and

rice, Vegetables, Cheese and eggs. Possibly, there could be one

than others in their preparation.

I did that -- inside of each folder, if you check... but again, if

you'd like to reorganize this, please do. I'm sure you can improve

it. :)

> Then, do not put vegan things separately.

Vegan things aren't listed separately, though some are indicated in

the title of the recipe.

> Then, I am not sure about the idea of putting a separate file for

> each and every recipe. For now it works, but when they start being

> too many?

When there were several recipes for one thing, I often grouped them

together. But again, if you find ones you'd like to move, please do.

> Remember that each time you click on a file, you have to

files open in the existing window.

> One solution that could be adopted would be to make such

documents, with many recipes in them, then the other members who

want to upload individual text files continue to do so, and once in

a while some good-natured soul with time on her hands can take the

main document and add all the text files, then delete them.

I felt that with recipes like " Apple Butter " , it helped to group

them together, but it was easier to find what I wanted in, say, a

rice dish, if they were filed separately. I don't want to have to

scroll through a kazillion rice dishes to get the one I want... I

want to see all the titles up front, and maybe something in the

description that tells me what's in the recipe, so if I dislike or

have an allergy to an ingredient, I can just ignore that recipe. I

also found it very useful to have the recipes be separate when I

wanted to print them out... no need to copy them to another file to

print just one recipe.

> If you find it is not convenient, and they take too much

> space, you may delete them, I won't be offended!

Nobody can delete a file except the original poster.

I spent a lot of time creating the files, and the arthritis in my

hands is flared up as a result. I have no problem with anyone that

wants to re-organize the files, and will be happy to delete mine if

that's what's wanted, so if you want changes you are welcome to make

them and I certainly won't be offended. Just let me know when you

want me to delete a file.

PT, thank you so much for all the work you do archiving the recipes

people share here. When I'm stuck for something to make these files are

one of the first places I turn. Tried and true recipes from people are

always my preference, over something unknown from a cookbook or website.

And to those of you who take the time to type up your recipes and share

them, thank you as well. I, for one, appreciate it. :)

You are very welcome, Sherri. I also appreciate the recipes

folks take time to type up and share. I run a couple of lists

and have found that after a while we run out of archive space

and the posts either have to be deleted by me or the gods of

. I would hate to have those recipes get lost! By putting

them safely into our files they are preserved for our use.

I am so happy to say I am now completely up to date with them.

Hi GB,

The mock crab cakes use shredded zucchini and are in the zucchini

folder. (I think they are somewhere else as well, but that's where I

find them.)

I bet they'd be great with carrot pulp also. Please let us know! :-)

Hi GB,

Also try the not-seafood file in the Substitutes file; there are 2 or

3 in there. What time is dinner? ;)

Peace,

lol GB I wish! It's greek salads tonight here, mmmm lots of olives,

and tomatoes from the garden. :) If you come up with a new carrot-

pulp-using crabcake don't forget to post! I feel bad I can never

figure out what to do with pulp from the juicer but at least the

worms love it.

Peace,

Diane
